kiwigav Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I have just discovered the sound of "Chet Baker" (yes I know, I live under a rock it seems) Have had a bit of a listen on the youtube thingy and appears to be very smooth jazz. Would like some advice on which albums to get (vinyl) I see there are a few reissues available. Amazon has these two in there top 10 selling jazz vinyl. Have some Grant Green on the way Idle Moments, and I do Like my collection of Vince Jones, Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, I do have a couple of the obvious ones Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Kenny Burrell. Cheers, Gavin.
Krispy Audio Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 He's got some out on Blue Note, worth checking out. But will depend on if you prefer his vocals or trumpeting. I'm more a fan of his lyrical works, so The Best of Chet Baker Sings is a fave of mine. Chet Baker & Strings also a good one.
Monty Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I have only heard a little of Chet Baker. I prefer him playing in a small group, than singing or with strings. But that's just me. If you like that West Coast cool style you could check out Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax). He often played with Baker. What Is There To Say? is an excellent album that I've seen around on vinyl reissue (it doesn't have Baker on it, however).
mickj1 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 i like his small group playing too. This one is great IMO - CB w Art Pepper and one of the best West Coast rhythm sections of the time: It was originally released as: Cheers Mick
Demondes Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Yeah Chet Baker has a weak voice, but quite good when used subtly as a kind of spoken whisper. +1 for Art Pepper and the other west coast jazz proponents of that era
Sir Rab of Everest Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 There's also "the route" with Pepper. I highly recommend the ~early 90s doco on Baker, made by a photographer... I'm having a mental lapse and can't recall his name... Bruce someone...?

Sir Rab of Everest Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Ahh you mean the doco on Chet Baker "Let's get lost" by Bruce Webber (1988) Yes, that's it! Great doco.
kiwigav Posted August 6, 2014 Author Posted August 6, 2014 Hi Guys, Thanks for all the suggestions. After spending sometime having a listen and getting side tracked in other directions I have settled on these two for now. I can see some lazy Sunday arvos coming my way soon. Cheers, Gav. 1
Sir Rab of Everest Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Ah, that Art Pepper is a sensational performance and a great recording! For me, much better than the Chet album. - r. 1
