Great piece indeed. :thumb:

It's just so obvious and it makes you want to scream in frustration that formulaic thought patterns still dominate the music industry.

That is a great article indeed. The public deserves so much more than what the record industry is dishing up these days. If I, as a paying music consumer am only going to be served up with a diet of Justine's Beaver and the like but get told that they don't like stocking too much of the classic 70's rock and other genre anymore because no one buys it anymore, it shouldn't take a uni degree to work out that the formula is indeed broken and the stores and music industry as a whole need to work out why people like me no longer frequent store like JB Hi Fi.

And as someone who really enjoys a complex plot in a TV series like True Detective, I also appreciate the time and imagination used by those prog musicians who ignore what the traditional record managers insist on with very those predictable and formulaic songs. Thankfully, I derive a lot of enjoyment and holistic discovery with much of the sort of music that I pursue. It doesn't become contrived or predictable, it has time to unfold and takes you on a much longer journey compared to your traditional 3 minute pop song and brings you back again feeling you have listened to some truly inspiring music.

I am therefore thankful that with the music I have collected over many years, I couldn't really care if I ever walked into JB's again as they rarely stock very much of what I am after. The only way to change that problem is start catering to the adults and ignore the kids for a while.

I can understand the jist  of the article and agree with a lot of it,  but to say there is no quality music about these days is plain incorrect and ignorant to say the least.

There is so much great music available to listen to and buy these days it is not funny.

Nobody is forcing anyone to listen to Justin Bieber, just as nobody is forcing anyone to watch the 99% of crap that is on FTA TV and pay TV.  Yes, there are some good TV shows coming out of pay TV channels, but bucket loads of crap.

All you old lazy farts need to spend some time searching for music as there is plenty of great music out there.  Or does it have to be wrapped up in pay channel music and spoon feed?

As part of that earlier piece was cognizant of the need to cater to the adults more with music it stands to reason, old farts like us see less value in some but not all of the music released today. Let's not also forget that what might sound good to you might seem like crap to me and vice versa. It's all about personal taste.

To put this into perspective, if the music industry began to cater to only me and released all sorts of music that I like, they would not be catering to other people. Conversely if the music industry catered for everything you liked and no-one else, then they would be letting the other people down. It's all about taste and to each, their own, I say.

Whoa, hang on....

This lazy old fart spends hours every day searching for new music but just don't find a lot of it at places like JB Hi Fi and similar shops like Sanity when they were around. My musical tastes covers a lot of territory including a lot of current music and having an insatiable appetite for music means I am often looking for something new and different. Having said that, with a pretty decent collection of music, I am often served better by listening to what I already have rather than looking for something new.

There is your problem Prog.  What do JB and Sanity know about music?  No doubt you would know a lot more.

Not sure how many good independent music stores there are in QLD, or do what most people do now. Search and listen on the internet, then order your music in the internet.   Here on SNA there is plenty of music being posted and a lit of it superb.

Unfortunately pay TV or large JB HiFi type shops are only going to be peddling in the commercial teeny music and dross like Coldplay.

Well, yes, of course there is plenty of great music out there, we old farts all know that. That's way many of us go searching on the web for music, and don't bother with stores like JB Hi-Fi any more these days. Quite simply, they only cater for a very restricted range of music.

Well, I'm not an old fart but I get my music from various sources and that includes JB and Amazon.

If I can find stuff I want there I get it, but if it is more obscure ( or less mainstream ) I buy direct from independent websites and the artist or band's website.

It's all part of the enjoyment of collecting music in physical media form.

Stores like JB need to pay the bills. They are often in the shopping centres now and paying huge rents. They simply have to appeal to the mass market, not niche clients who would probably prefer to go to an independent store anyway and chat to the owner. iTunes, Spotify etc has effected JB's music sales to such a degree they have tried to launch their own subscription based streaming option to compete. JB started out as having the biggest music range available in a B&M store. Now music would cover less than 50% of most stores floorplan as it doesn't cover the store costs.
