Speaker Stands for Rogers Studio 1

Recommended Posts

I would like to get some advice regarding speaker stands for my Rogers Studio 1 speakers.  The stands I'm currently using are made out of MDF or similar and are approximately 20cm high.  When listening, the sound stage is a little low for my liking.  I was reading a page somewhere on the net (can't remember where) that said the Studio 1's work best with a stand that is 40cm high.  As an experiment, I chucked my speakers onto my dining chairs which have a seating height a little over 40cm (I'm sitting in the Qantas lounge in Melbourne, so can't measure exact height).  While the speakers lost a little definition, the sound stage sounded like it was coming from a more natural height.  So I started looking for some stands...

These looked okay http://www.decibelhifi.com.au/ol5b-olympus-500mm-single-column-pair-black/ but the top plate is considerably smaller than that of my current stands.  I'm guessing these stands are designed with bookshelf speakers in mind, not something as big as the Studio 1's.  I'm worried this will cause problems with the SQ of my speakers.  I would really like to utilise the wisdom of the members of this forum who are much more experienced than me.  What do you think of these stands?  Are they the right stands for the application, or would you suggest I look at a different model altogether?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Guest Hensa

I used to have Rogers Studio 1a speakers and they worked well on 400mm stands, preferably loaded with sand or similar for solidity. I think the ones you've linked are a little tall for the Rogers and the top plate is a bit too small. I've got a pair of these unused at the moment:

They are around 410mm tall with the upgraded spikes (originals were too rounded to pierce carpet) with top plate of 170mm x 210mm and worked well with my Celef PE-1s which are very similar is size to the Rogers speakers. You're welcome to borrow them for a test run if you like - I'm near Hornsby. PM me if interested.

Hi Andrew

No doubt you will have read the general rule of thumb is tweeters at ear height in your listening position. That's for smaller stand mounts at least.

I don't think there is much off the shelf to suite large stand mounts.

I would be getting something made up otherwise the alternatives like these are relatively expensive.

Thanks for the helpful advice.  adamg, are there any local manufacturers of speaker stands?  I would rather support a local manufacturer if possible.

Hensa, thanks for the very generous offer - I've sent you a PM.
