Help! My Hercules has lost speed

Recommended Posts

Went to put on Hugh Masekela Hope and pressed the 45 speed button (changes to blue) on the De'Thinn turntable fitted with an exterior Mose/Hercules power supply and nothing, nada - light indicator shows blue on the t/table switch but no motor activation at all!

33 speed is fine and checking the belt all seems ok, tried switching the unit off but to no avail.

Any ideas guys??

Would appreciate tips as not keen on putting it in for repair due to separation anxiety issues!

Contraire my dear YM, this is a Thorens TD150MK11 chassis with custom plinth,(looks Linny) modded Denon DA-401 arm with only a smattering of anything Linn (but superior to) so not so easy to dismiss!  :P

As @@Luc unfairly called me a "nasty old man" just minutes ago and now an obfuscationist I will treat you both as the troll @evilangelist deserves

This isn't the Slee loaner program!

Speaking of which has anyone actually been allowed to borrow the Slee mono block amps? @@cheekyboy

But you taught me everything I know about "trolling"!

The truth be told, I was merely trying to make you seem a "valuable" friend in times of need and "pumping your tyres up"(not that I had any intention of loaning) but no chance of any semblence of help in any shape or form!  :(

Don't drag me down to Luc's level - no offense implied @Luc  :D

Check the connections and reseat them.

Thanks - first thing I did was that.

Have you checked the motor wire connections?

So I presume your Thorens uses the 110v Premotec motor?  I happen to have a good-sounding 33/45 speed controller designed for this motor ... which I no longer need (due to my switch to #9's Premotec speed controller).  Would you like a lend of it, to see how you like it?

Andy

Don't drag me down to Luc's level

I saw that.

...and of course no offence is taken, I'd expect no less from an environ of G.W. :)

Take Syndal railway station out of the equation and then there is nothing separating Mt.Waverley from Glen Waverley except breeding and a certain odd way of pronouncing in a querulous tone: Gar len Wave-erley?

I grew up in the early 60's with that refrain issuing on a regular basis from Mum's wide store of less desirable places to be seen at in Bleak City like anything north of Glen Waverley(wasn't there when I was a little girl she said..umm Mum that was 1930...) and then there was  those odd people who lived in Brighton who resented people from Wangarrata buying a beachside house(Mum why did you ever move?) Dad was rather less politic about the inhabitants of those north of Stevensons Rd.

I'll take the trek out there though when next down there. Just to prove to her there are actually nice people out there who know what to do with their knives and forks after a meal.

No as I have power up at 33 - is there an extra wire for 45?

Thought it was controlled speed-wise by sending different frequency hz

Yes, Clive, I believe that's how the Hercules works.  It should feed AC to the motor at 50Hz for 33 1/3rd rpm and 67.5Hz for 45rpm.

The key issue is, IMO ... does it also (as well as feeding mains Hz) alter the phase difference between the 2 pairs of wires on the Premotec (this is important for motor vibration)?

Regards,

Andy

Not quite. I suspect that the Hercules has worked out that it is not powering a Linn and gone on strike.

I have a solution EvilC, send me your 45's; problem solved.

Hope and Fleetwood Mac are too valuable for that - might have single 45's of Suzi Quatro - Devil Gate Drive & The Mixtures - The pushbike song I could forward to you!

Might have used a few coins stacked on top of the old radiogram stylus though that might have carved a new path!

I suggest contacting the manufacturer, Edmund Chan.

If you don't have his email address, drop me a PM.

Thanks Wol, think it might be the wisest step to take next

You've been "badoozled"!  ;)

Interesting question Andy - one most probably beyond my teeny alcohol addled prematurely aged brain's capabilities!  :P

Are you able to adjust the speed/hz on the Hercules to fine tune the turntable speed? or is it preset.

I have a AC Thoren type motor on my Scan Dyna that is just a little too slow 33.1.

Sorry to go slightly OT, I know nothing about the Hercules.

I think that I might already have the Suzi Q one somewhere in similar condition. You can keep the Pushbike Song.

Have just spoken to Edmund who makes the Hercules and I quote:

I see, so your Mose + Hercules does not work at 45 rpm.

Can you do a measurement by voltmeter, is there any AC voltage present to motor at 45 rpm.

Please check the AC voltage to motor, if there is no voltage at all, it is Hercules malfunction.

If AC voltage present at around 90 V AC, it probably the voltage is too old.

Please check and let me know, I will give your suggestion to fix this issues.

Cheer

Edmund

Prompt reply at least - now just need to do the testing & take it from there!
