I'm after a power cable for my amplifier and have two options. Buy a rather longish PC (2.5mts) with an AUS plug to go directly into the wall, or a 1.8mtr US cable to plug into my Shunyata Hydra conditioner. Of course finding a 1.8mtr US PC is much easier.

An experienced SNA'er advised that i plug the amp directly into the wall, not the Hydra, and he uses an older style Hydra like mine.

It's got me wondering what other SNA'ers do?

I have a Belkin 4 outlet board I plug my main hifi components into which runs to a dedicated 20A power outlet.

this runs straight to the meter box I had installed originally for an AirCon.

I reckon it sounds very good!

Shunyatas are specifically designed to be non-current limiting passive conditioners. You're missing out if you don't connect your amp to your Hydra (Look up Shunyata DTCD for more info on this).

I run ...

  • Power amps directly into wall on dedicated circuit.
  • Subs directly into same dedicated circuit.
  • Main source stuff off a Thor PS10 and power board into that same circuit.  Run out of wall sockets by that stage.
  • Other nearby miscellaneous stuff (unused pre-amp, unused TT, PS3, TV, TV Recorder, et al) use another Thor board on a normal household circuit.

I am never ever likely to draw the current that the power amps are capable of, but I'm not going to take a risk if I don't have to.  For a the few $ involved I would plug power amps into a wall.  This is also the advice of my amp's designer.

I believe that properly designed stuff  can be connected to the wall ( as does Zaphod)

My problem is that I have 2 power outlets and 10 devices to connect.

So I run one outlet into a Belkin powerboard and run all the AV stuff from there.

The other outlet runs into 2  Consonance PW1 line conditioners daisy chained.

I run most of my gear (TV, audio and computer) through several Belkin powerboards for surge protection. I don't believe they qualify as power conditioners though.

All stereo, AV, TV gear goes through a Cawsey PowerBox.  Made here in Melbourne by Garry Cawsey.

When I last saw him he was working on some new powerboxes (later than that shown on the link) which sound excellent.

I find for computer equipment a UPS is a must to protect from all those nasty brownouts (which we get lots of out our way).  It's the brown outs that can stuff your computer programs up.

I wouldn't go running an amp into conditioner with most power conditioners but I do go amps direct into the Shunyata Cyclops.

Everything you put into the circuit comes with a price. With conditioners it seems to be getting a balance right between the amount of conditioning (reduction in noise) and the effects on power (current delivery) along without adding too much of their own distortion to the signature.

I've heard a few of the better isolation transformers, regeneration and passive conditioners (PurePower, Silver Circle, Isotek, Shunyata) and in terms of dynamics and transparency the Cyclops were clearly up at the front. They were however built specifically to run with higher current amps.

The Typhon which I tried out here the other week (many thanks Cam) was also still really great with dynamics and then even better again on isolation.

But none of it actually makes any sound ;)

What are the symptoms of DC on the mains?

Does it cause transformers to buzz/hum?

Transformers running higher temps , as far as buzz/hum I couldn't tell all mine are vanished & baked no mechanical noise .
