Grimmie
I need to re-set my TT and arm and have been looking around for the gear to do it. Amazon UK has these: Dr Feickerts and Project £149 £94 Would like any advice as to which is best from those who've used them. Similarly below, the two discs. £20 £25 Arm weight scales would be good too, - any links? Also, any Australian suppliers that can price match and any other essentials you can think of?. Anthony John Colbert
I've not used either of the protractors you show there. I've got a mint lp protractor which is specific to my arm and table. The mint alignment sounds way better than the vpi jig setup. The mint is available for any setup if you know the effective length and mounting distance of your tonearm
frankn
I'd check with Warrick - Pure Music, Toma Music (SNA Sponsors) or Decibel HiFi or local shops depending on where you are. I also have a Mint however these are cartridge+arm specific setup, so new cartridge = new Mint. I am also considering a Dr Freickert protractor
pulinap
I've got this..... ...bit fiddly than Feickert to set up initially ..... but the mirror helps a lot......
Anthony John Colbert
The mint will work with any cart unless you have an arm with a fixed mounting in the headshell
ophool
I own a Mint and cannot see why it will not work with any cart and arm having the same pivot to spindle distance and the same effective length.
Grimmie
So - I typed into Google "Notts analogue space ace arm overhang" and first post in the first selection forum (Audiokarma) was a thread on exactly this topic. and once through the queries came this nugget. "On the measurement of 210mm, I assume you meant pivot to spindle? At a 210mm mounting distance, overhang for a Baerwald alignment would be 18mm. That's the distance that the stylus hangs past the spindle." (i.e. total = effective length) Without being able to lay my hands quickly on a super-duper caliper / guage thingy I did this: I know, not accurate to 0.01 of a mil or maybe even not 0.1, but I'm sure it's within 0.5 of a millimetre and they did suggest that fine tuning by ear may be necessary after that. VTA done by the spirit level on the arm method. (Note the perfect width piece of cardboard under the cart front edge to prevent any weight bearing down on the stylus) . My Hi-Fi News alignment guage has been applied as close as poss to both zero points and the vertical pitch (azimuth) now as good as the eye can get it The blank LP that NAS supply as a 'Dust Cover' is just smooth blank vinyl, so I employed it as a means to test that Anti-Skip was about right, very slow inward movement. And that, for now is as good as I can manage. The one missing is stylus pressure, but that has not been altered, and I have a scales in the post as we speak. maxspl
Looking good. I used the Stevenson alignment geometry when I set the 2M black up on there previously for you. Using the Feickert gauge.
Grimmie
Ah! Mark, I was kinda hoping that you wouldn't see this thread having stuffed up your good work. So, what alignment geometry is the Hifi world protractor? Strange really that I barely noticed what you were up to at the time, now I wish I'd paid more attention. It's sounding darn good though, of course no matter what you do you're always left wondering if it's actually at optimum setting. Edit: I see, the 210 + 18mm is the Baerwald setting. Do you reckon there's a lot of difference in the sound? Ged Edited August 13, 2014 by Grimmie
maxspl
Hi Ged. Happy to set it up for you if you can bring it over to my place ? If you have the tools already on the way though it will be a good learning experience to set it up yourself and try a few different geometrys. I only ever used Stevenson with the hyper. Grimmie
Many thanks for the offer Mark, but I'll leave well enough alone now as it seems to be pretty good.I may still buy an arm guage in future especially if I ever get to install my second arm, (the Jelco 750 with V15 III) then again maybe the old steel rule will do the biz. Not to say you can't invite yourself over any time you fancy, and have a listen to the new system.
