ophool
Reading here it would appear to be available direct. Then again they are not the L1000. Edited August 5, 2014 by ophool
atavid
Thank you for the only reply ophool. You're right, i made a typo but as i didn't get any replies i figured no one knew the difference anyway.(Should have been the PK 100 or the L1000) I was hoping they might be stocked by someone in Australia. It would appear to be the answer to my prayers...a simple file player via external USB drive,no onboard DAC and not requiring connection to a PC or a NAS. Why oh why arn't more manufacturers making these i dont know. You would think with the popularity of the now discontinued SB Touch a similar or even simpler such product could be manufactured by some up and coming company to fill the void. I would argue that a lot of people don't want to stream, don't want to run their computer to play music files, don't want the hassle of a NAS, and dont want to be subsumed in the hassle of configuring a device that can run SB server. ophool
Given that they look like a mini-pc and probably run some sort of 'nix OS with either a soundcard or an SOTM USB card, I might be tempted to think that a headless Mac Mini could do the same once set up and for rather less $$$. atavid
Yes,looks to be just an itx or mini pc running Linux or similar.Gave some thought to building one myself, but wasn't sure about the quality of on board sound. What is a SOTM usb card by the way? ophool
What is a SOTM usb card by the way? This - BTW IIRC they used to use the ESI Juli@ soundcard for S/PDIF out. If you have a DAC with a decent USB in that is of no concern. Edited August 7, 2014 by ophool
atavid
Thank you ophool.I'm learning a lot. This is probably going to sound like a dumb question to those more knowledgeable with digital than i am, but if i understand you correctly and i build a quiet passively cooled mini itx pc with either one of these SOTM cards then i can connect the pc to my Stello Signature DAC via USB. Can i ask how does one interface with the pc to view ,select and play files. Is there an app that i could run on an Android phone or tablet perhaps? i have an old Iphone 4 i could use if necessary.? ophool
If your DAC does not use the power from the USB to operate (ie has its own power cable) I would be dubious of the value of the isolating USB card myself. It may still provide a benefit but I am not in a position to test that. As for the rest, I believe what you want can be done, but that is not an area in which I have done very much. I just use a firewire interface connected to my everyday PC to provide S/PDIF to my DAC and for vinyl digitising. I played around with a Squeezbox Classic, SB server and remote apps for that, but decided that for my setup there was too much infrastructure for no perceptible benefit. One thing I would question, using an iphone with other than another Apple device might run you into compatability issues in finding suitable apps.
