Another speaker purchase advise thread...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Well with various upgrading of system components, I'm almost full circle & would like to update my existing Focal Chorus bookshelf's to a set of 2.5 or 3-way floor standers.

So at this stage I'm interested in something from the $1000 - 2000 price point. Interested in your thoughts & from there I can audition the various suggestions.

I'm really like my Focals bookshelf's (or focals in general), & thinking the 714V's floor standing model are around $1400 could be good, although maybe these are not enough of a step?.

Focal 716 @ around $1900

Focal 816VW @ $2300

B&W 683 S1's which are around 2K in stores. A mate has some & they sound pretty good.

Q Acoustics 2050i gets good reviews on What Hifi & come in at around $1000 now.

Elac FS187 @ $2000.

EPOS Epic 5 @ $1200

MS Aviano 6 @ $800 (on sale).

KEF Q500 @ $1600

KLIPSCH RF-52 II @ @1600

In this price range is there anything else you can suggest I consider? It's a pretty wide price point with a lot of different options to consider.

Essentially, they will be front speakers for my 5.1 HTPC & stereo speakers for my vinyl via my Sondek. All powered by a Yamaha RX-A1030 which is 110wpc in stereo. I have a Yam Sub connected as well.

Our place is not super large (not tiny either), so I don't need mammoth sized units.

Oh, I mostly play classic/modern rock, grunge, hard rock & punk etc if that has any effect on choice.

Thanks in advance for your feedback/suggestions.

I'd stick with Focal if that's the sound you like. I've heard the 816's and they are very nice. The 900 series sound even better however over your budget. I'd strongly consider the 816's. If you want to go something different to Focal make sure you listen before you buy.

I've got the 826VW's as mains in the HT room. Great speakers and a massive jump over the 826V's. I wasn't aware the 800VW range was still available, might be worth a bit of negoitation as probably old stock now.

Great thing is the 800 range is quite easy to drive as well

I'm very handy on the end of a Weller, but woodworking skills, they are best left to the professionals!

I did take a look at AdelaideSpeakers - they seems to have a nice range.

So much choice - it's very confusing. I'll research the Focal 800VW range a little more too.
