betocool
Not wanting to hijack a previous thread about where you get HD music, I thought I'd ask where you guys get your FLACs (or WAVs or uncompressed 44.1/16) from? I haven't really found any site selling uncompressed music, either it's 320kbps MP3's or straight up to HD, which, given my system and ears, would be a waste of money. I have these compilations, from when Napster was free and all the fashion, where I burned all the 128k mp3s into an audio CD, creating playlists I'm very happy with. The best ones I'd like to get on FLAC, that's it! Cheers, Alberto
little blue penguin
This article is a couple of years old and I haven't used any of these suggestions myself yet, as my FLACS are ripped from my cds. http://www.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/2012/jun/14/digital-music-flac-sources
LogicprObe
If I felt the need to use FLAC, I would make them myself.
wolster
The easiest way is to simply rip them from CDs. I use dBpoweramp software.
ThirdDrawerDown
Some caution is required as the flac retail sites that sell full albums for $5 each are credit card theft scams. if your pc's cd player is occupied and you really want to flac those files now, the online (back up) copy of the files you own can often be located through google groups search with search terms flac and -mp3
Demondes
George Brandis usually comes around to my house and we have a swap session. Seriously I usually rip purchased cd's, occasionally purchase from HDtracks, Yeproc, Merge, Daptone, etc. and some from unnamed sources

betocool
Thanks for all your replies. My own CDs are ripped as Flacs, it took some time but worth the effort, and each time I buy new I rip them after the first listen. But if I was looking for a single, that I'd get on a digital loss less format. I'll have a look at your suggestions!

I can buy cd's in US and send them directly to Murfie who will rip them for me. That's if I can't get it on Murfie already. waxman
+1 for Bandcamp Definitely an independant flavour - but lots of hidden gems to be found.
LogicprObe
You can never be sure of the quality, especially if they are 'free'.(although, you should be able to hear if it was an MP3 conversion if you have the CD)

That's if I can't get it on Murfie already. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I have kept all of my cds which I have ripped to my NAS as a physical backup. There must be huge numbers of CDs which have been sold at really cheap prices which have been ripped more than once. Murfie has created some sort of p2p sharing that will never be able to be monitored as the person owns the CD at the time it is copied. Once the CD is onsold it would be impossible to monitor whether the digital copy on individual computers has been wiped.

Luc
I steal all mine using What.cd and if I like them I then buy them, if I don't I give 'em the flick. When I say "buy them" I mean I go and order the album on vinyl if it's an option and if not I chase down the cd via the cheapest possible outlet like Amazon or Ebay or Discgogs or Music Stack or Bandcamp and and whole plethora of other online sales sites. I treat What.cd like I used to treat the guy in Mt Waverley's first record shop way back in the 60's 70's...with a weekly session where I'd listen to as many LP's as he'd let me try out. I bought 1 a week from last year in primary school till I got seduced by CD's when they first came out. Gone full circle again and I'm kinda back where I started all those years ago. Piracy? Pfft. I'm comfortable with it.
Mondegreen
For HD tracks you don't need a VPN - just give any old address in the USA and you're good to go. Works for me...

Have you found it works for all labels? I have found that I can buy some albums but have restrictions on other albums, eg Diana Krall, Angus and Julia Stone. http://www.hdtracks.com/angus-julia-stone-deluxe
