Playing a record - my turntable experience

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I wanted to share my recent experience with analog audio...

Last time I played a record was about 25 years ago when, as a teenager, I had on loan Technics stereo system with the turntable on top. I remember I was quite excited about it at the time, but as it turned out the stylus and the cartridge on this thing were in extremely poor shape so it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Ended up listening a single record, just to try and didn't bother much more with it...

Anyway, back to the story, few weeks ago I purchased Rega P5 turntable with Dynavector 20x2H cartridge from a fellow SNA member. I thought, having the house all for myself (my wife and son are overseas visiting family) this was the perfect timing to acquire a new toy.

While waiting for the turntable to arrive, I spent a lot of time on vinylengine and other related websites finding out that there is a bit more to playing a record than just playing a record :)

So finally about 10 days ago just before weekend the big box arrived, and on Saturday evening it was time to set it all up.

Armed with the printed Rega Baerwald alignment protractor from vinylengine and stylus tracking force gauge tool I spent about half an hour or so looking at all the bits and pieces, making sure it's all level and setting everything up as best as I could.

Plugged the cables in my Luxman SQ-38u connected to Dali Helicon 300mk2, and put on a Leonard Cohen 'Songs From the Road' record and ... I was absolutely blown away!

Leonard Cohen never sounded so good!

Music, in awesome detail, with soothing and precise deep end; Cohen's deep voice simply filled the room. I sat down and soaked to the whole Side 3 of the album in pure bliss. And then Side 4, 1 and 2

I then put on a bit of RHCP .. just as good ... wonderfull thing this vinyl record thing :)

So ... P5 has now taken over the role of primary source in my setup and I am completely hooked.

It is now time to start building up my record collection...

And a RCM, various bottles of liquid, an anti-static gun, brushes, stylus cleaner fluid possibly an Onzow blob, special inner sleeves, dedicated album racks........ the list grows. ENJOY

You're experience matches mine a few years ago. Pretty annoying really. Just when you think you've got your system sounding good along comes this uppity new-fangled source and shows you what a real sound stage is like.

Thank you all for kind words :) I ordered a Spin Clean record cleaning implement yesterday and got me some new records as well ... now looking for the appropriate shelf to store records ... and hoping I can convince my wife that we really need a wall shelf in our lounge to put the turntable on :)

Now thinking about it, this turntable is likely the most exciting piece of hifi gear I ever purchased :) Right up there with my first ever half decent gear ... Sony CDP-715, Yamah receiver and a pair of Tannoy M3 speakers (all still going strong)

A great journey ahead.  Building your record collection will inevitably involve spots of frustration with QC issues with new LPs and less than accurate ebay descriptions, persist and you'll reap great rewards :)

Now you can look forward to acquiring hundreds - if not thousands -

Andy

Just to make sure you "understand" Andy's cryptic statement.....substitute "acquiring" for "spending".....moola!!

Enjoy the journey its great fun!!! :P
