Rega RP6, Rega DAC and Oppo 105

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to share my recent experience in moving from an Oppo 105 to a Rega DAC. I’ve had the Oppo for almost 2 years and it has been a fantastic device for my purposes. Primarily it’s used as a Blu-Ray player and for streaming FLAC media across my network. The sound is without a doubt very detailed and the bass is tight and controlled. However despite this I’ve always found it to be a bit ‘shrill sounding’ in the treble department, but I’d always managed to live with it. This was until late last year when I purchased a Rega RP6 turntable to replace a 1980s vintage Technics SL-D3 I had been using. With this my vinyl listening increased and my awareness of the difference between it and the Oppo became more apparent.  Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah on vinyl sounded natural, smooth and warm. My CD of the same album while good on the Oppo, didn’t convey the same feeling and some of the higher notes I started to find borderline offensive to my ears. I want to stress that the Oppo is by no means a poor performer, but with my system it was definitely too bright (Marantz PM KI Pearl Lite with Monitor Audio RX6s. I also have a Schiit Valhalla headphone amp and HD600s).

From this experience I decided I wanted a DAC that provided an ‘analogue’ sounding experience. I went into this researching options with reasonable expectations - I did not expect a DAC to come close to my RP6 in terms of sound signature, but something less bright and in that direction would very welcome. I also didn’t want to spend over $1000. After extensive research I started leaning towards the idea of getting a Rega DAC. Last week I took my headphone amp, phones and some CDs to audition one in store. After reading online and the impressions from this small listening session I decided this was the DAC for me and purchased one.

I hate the idea of buying/selling and losing money and thankfully the Oppo has not gone to waste and is serving as a transport for the Rega (via Coaxial). From the first listen the Rega was definitely less shrill than the Oppo in the high frequencies, but overall the sound was otherwise quite similar. Now with a solid 50 hours running time I can say that I am a very happy camper and am quite amazed at the analogue sound the Rega DAC is able to achieve.

Anyway, this is just my impressions. It’s been widely reported online what the Rega sounds like, I’m just glad that my money hasn’t gone to waste. Very happy!
