dirty
Gidday kids, Our next vacation starts in Edinburgh, we have 7 days to get to London, we will spend a couple of days in Edinburgh before going to the lakes district and working our way to London for a wedding. Then to Barcelona for 4 days, 2 days in Nice and 4 days in Venice before coming home. So on my last European vacation I asked for your advice on places to stay and things to do. We got some great advice and am looking for the same here. We love looking at old places and would like to visit some great pubs and quirky places, all advice would be greatly appreciated. dirty. mickj1
Hi Dirty When we were there in 2008, we found the Lakes District to be an overpopulated and tired tourist trap -we couldn't wait to get out of the place. We really liked the Yorkshire Dales - beautiful landscapes, fantastic pubs and B&Bs and excellent walks in the Dales and especially the limestone pavements - go there if you can fit it in. Stratford on Avon was similarly (to Lakes district) overcrowded, but we really loved the villages, open gardens, B&Bs and countryside in the Cotswolds. Might be worth a look if it's in the right direction. Cheers Mick
mondie
Dirty, Based on places that we have loved spending time in I would suggest plotting a course hat captures the following down to London: Berwick upon Tweed (amazing history, an area of many battles between the Scots & English, the Spanish even had a go) Whitby Robin Hoods Bay (Smugglers cove) York Harrogate Warwick The castle is an absolute must) Stratford upon Avon (if a week day only) Then thread your way through the Cotswold's ending up in Bath. That would be a brilliant road trip and you would see some great coastal and stunning English countryside combined with some great history and stunning architecture. If you find yourselves near Wolverhampton/Birmingham, There's a quirky pub in Tipton. http://www.madorourkes.com/

mondie
Defintely B&B's & pubs, that is a big part of the quintessential english experience for me. You really are spoilt for choice with the route you have planned.

3G_
Just got back from Europe. As nice and quirky as Venice is, 4 days is maybe too long, we had two night there and that was enough for me. Expensive compared to almost everywhere else and not a huge variety of food. We were lucky to score the Festa Del Redentore on the last day of our trip.

I was in Venice 4 weeks ago and we did 3 nights which would be too long if you didn't have kids slowing you down as we did. Tourist mecca, there is no other industry or reason to be there. Just eat away from the big attractions and ask about service fees before sitting down, 1 place charged us 15%, thought the prices were too cheap. It's an amazing city but once you visit the St Marcs attractions there is a samness about the place and architecture wasn't a patch on Florence. I'd spend 2 of your nights at Lake Garda (not too far away), 1 night in Sirmione at the southern end and the other at Riva del Garda or Torbole in the north. Berwick and the whole Tweed River Valley is very nice -on both sides of the border and into the Cheviot Hills. Some great pubs, scenery and history. Lived there for a summer back in the 90s. Expensive compared to almost everywhere else and not a huge variety of food. We were lucky to score the Festa Del Redentore on the last day of our trip. We don't plan on spending 4 days in Venice, 1 full day is enough, we went there a few years ago and would just like to wander the back streets for a day, maybe have another Bellini in Harry's Bar, a complete rip off but at least we get a drink for our troubles. Pity we miss the festival though that looks pretty good. Agreed. I was in Venice 4 weeks ago and we did 3 nights which would be too long if you didn't have kids slowing you down as we did. Thanks blybo, had a look at Sirmione, it looks pretty good, I think the sort of place we would like. Where did you stay at Lake Garda? I assume you would hire a car to get there? I agree with Florence enjoyed that on our last trip, a beautiful city. Thanks, dirty.
