Monitor Audio BX2 - Thoughts on these?

Recommended Posts

Hey Peeps,

Looking for speakers for an old Optonica amplifier - 40 watts - in my sister's hifi. Will be used with an equally old Optonica Turntable.

Any thoughts on the Monitor Audio bookshelf speakers? Budget strictly limited to $500 - happy with second hand.

Appreciate any input.

cheers

Tricky

I had a pair of the Monitor Audio silvers RS1 book shelves and I also listened to the bronzes they are nice - not the last word on detail but good step up from most of the cheap rubbish peddled in the electronics stores these days (not Hifi stores) another two bookshelf speakers in your price range which are supposed to be outstanding value are the pioneer TAD designed $129 SP-BS22 which are also available as a stand mount, and the new Sony SS-C5 bookshelves. I own an old pair of Sony SS-G7a (very large speakers) which are a big step up from the monitor audio silvers in detail. Sony have made some superb speakers so don't be put off if you select carefully - I think the Sonys are around 4-500 dollars. The monitors from memory have a sensitivity of 90db into 8ohms. Good luck with your speaker oddessy.

I've got a pair of BX2's in a small home theatre room. The room is not ideal and the speakers are mounted close to corners using the OEM Monitor Audio wall mounts. In an adjacent room I've got a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1's. The BX2's certainly need a heftier amp and can sound a little shrill if the room and other components don't match. For its price it's quite an analytical speaker.

The 10.1's on the other hand are (IMHO) are more forgiving and are currently paired with a cheap Tripath amp.

I don't think you'd be unhappy with any speaker of this class, 40W is enough grunt to power BX2's.
