DoggieHowser Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Huh? Where does it say the 3.7 is dead? It is worrying that the new speakers shown to date have ditched the coincident drivers. Without that they just become me too manufacturers IMO. I guess that's not surprising given that the company is now owned and run by suits. Look at the URL http://www.thielaudio.com/products/discontinued-models/cs3-7/ It's filed under DISCONTINUED MODELS
Steam Posted November 22, 2014 Author Posted November 22, 2014 (edited) Oh! I'm using a stupid iPAD so I didn't see the URL. (What use would an iTARD have for a URL?) Well that is a disaster unless they have a new improved version to release. No wonder Kevin offered me such a good price on them. I was tempted. Still am. Just didn't have the beans at the time. Will be watching the classifieds for a pair. Edited November 22, 2014 by Dr Nick
DoggieHowser Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Yeah.. it's not shown on my Safari either But I saw the url in another forum which doesn't truncate the full URL FWIW, if you like the speakers go get it. I have a pair and I don't know if I will ever replace it (unless it dies and Thiel no longer has parts). 1
legend Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 FWIW, if you like the speakers go get it. +1 I totally agree. Jim Theil was a true giant in speaker design - I have always said if I could design a speaker as good as Jim's then I would die happy! When in Canberra a mate had Theil CS7.2s that I used as a reference when designing the Kantus. 1
DoggieHowser Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 the 3 new models that will come out early 2015. TM3 MSRP $3498/pr http://soundapproach.com/speakers/bookcase-speakers/thiel-tm3-monitor-speaker-pair-coming-soon.html TT1 $5798/pair...price mistake? this is supposed to replace CS3.7? http://soundapproach.com/speakers/tower-speakers/thiel-tt1-tower-speaker-pair-coming-soon.html TC1 $2495 each http://soundapproach.com/thiel-tc1-center-channel-single-coming-soon.html? Uurrgh. Got this from AVS. MULTI ORDER CROSSOVER. BLECH
Steam Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 Wow. Buy a company and then don't use any of the flash drivers Jim Thiel spent years perfecting. I don't get it. I hope they sell any of that old IP to someone that wants to make use of it. They can then continue making me too HT speakers. Am I being to harsh?
Hifiplus Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Reminds me of the latest snells, shame they ditched the coaxial driver.
DoggieHowser Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 probably because Thiel drivers were too expensive to build. 1
Steam Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 probably because Thiel drivers were too expensive to build. Yes that's probably the reason but that's what sets them apart. Expensive drivers has not stopped magico or raidho etc. it just depends do you want to sell mass market crap or something unique. Seems pretty clear what they decided. At the very least they should licence or sell the design etc to someone else that is willing to go that path.
DoggieHowser Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 You don't have to preach to the converted I spoke to a dealer - he's offloaded his entire Thiel inventory though I am almost tempted to ask for a price on his ex demo 2.7s He's waiting for the new ones to be released - he'll order a pair of each to audition before committing to a large order. As he should. I do think it is a shame. I feel my 3.7 with twin SS2.2s lack for nothing and punches way above its price tag. If it were too expensive to build, perhaps doubling the price tag might help - it would still be competitive IMHO. 1
PKay Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Does anyone in Sydney have the 3.7 I am looking to upgrade my speakers and would really appreciate having a listen?
Steam Posted December 13, 2014 Author Posted December 13, 2014 Problem is if you like them how would you buy a pair? I don't recall ever seeing any secondhand and the dealers probably don't have any either.
DoggieHowser Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 You could plan a short trip to see a dealer in Melbourne? Or even Singapore. Always love browsing in Adelphi. The SG dealer for Thiel also has Joseph Audio and German Physics on demo
PKay Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 More likely to get to Melbourne before Singapore.
PKay Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 If anyone in Sydney has a pair and would be willing to let me have a listen it would be greatly appreciated. I would come with a bottle of wine as well.
PKay Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 As these are discontinued does anybody know how replacement parts will be sourced in the future?
Class A Audio Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Hello, Thiel Audio will continue to support the deiscontinued model up to 10 years , of course , spare parts will be available also. So far , there is no replacement model for CS3.7 yet . Regards, Kevin Class A Audio

DoggieHowser Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 A couple of days ago - Thiel's FB page teased this: Zoom in and the horror starts.. Aluminium Die Cast Basket 2000W peak power 12 key remote control front mounted graphic user interface and advanced DSP/filter algorithms Where's Thiel's long throw short coil? Who still talks about peak power?? What are we, a boom box?? Why do you need a remote and a DSP?? The SmartSubs fixed all these problems years ago. Measure the distance. Set it in. Forget about it. And then today the horror finally sets in. FFS!!! biwiring!!?? Really? From Thiel??? Phase coherent what?? I Just Can't 1
Hergest Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 (edited) Why keep the name? The Thiel name has an excellent reputation. The new company made up of venture capitalists clearly hope to make a motsa trading on the name before the whole lot goes belly up. Edited January 10, 2015 by Hergest 1
Steam Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 Seems we are not the only ones unimpressed. http://www.stereophile.com/content/thiel-back See the comments below
PKay Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Any updates on whether anyone has any in Sydney? I may have to take a trip to Melbourne to hear a pair after all.
Midori Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Class A audio having the Thiel 3.7 at a very good price. I imagine that it would need quite a big room to "breath". Any idea if this would be overpowering for a room size of 5m x 4m?
