Casablanca. Beautifully written. Amazing characters and equally amazing actors in the role. No CGI or SFX. Just great lines.

Couldn't get them all in. Sorry for the double post back there.

Double Indemnity-Another Billy Wilder movie.Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck star in this film noir classic

Woman In The Dunes. From a Japan and I don't know who directed it. Too long too explain the story so think Sisyphus.

That'll do for now :)

As Robert DeNiro is my all time favorite actor, it would be remiss of me not to bring up this gem of a movie made before DeNiro became famous.

I saw this movie on TV recently - the tension, atmosphere and settings were palpable.

If you liked this, suggest you watch 'Last Train to Freo'.

The mention of Stephen King reminds me of a movie based on one of his books that Mrs M really enjoyed - "Dolores Claiborne"  Quite an engrossing story with some excellent acting and some nice scenery around Maine or thereabouts.

Not at all what I would expect from a Stephen King story, though - zero supernatural content (thankfully).

If you liked that, suggest you get a hold of Dean Koontz's 'Intensity'. Very hard to find though (unless you ask nicely...)

This is probably the freakiest and most disturbing film I have seen. Hopefully this scenario could no longer happen in Australia, but sometimes you do wonder if there are people like this out there.

It was probably the only time I have ever felt weird about being Australian, knowing that in the past, this story could have been a reality.

*Shudders*

well if talking bloywood releases...

Sholay is probably an all time great !

Deewar, Anand are also great movies.

I think Brumby, Grumpy and Tony M have listed most of my favourites, but I'd add anything with Gene Hackman or Donald Sutherland from the 70s - eg:

Klute

Don't look now

A couple of real oldies that seem to capture me every time they are played very late at night at times

Ice Cold in Alex (a WW2 story set during the African desert campaign featuring an alcoholic soldier among others and a field ambulance on a cross country trek)

Once a Jolly Swagman (follows the life of an English speedway rider, from youngster, to war hero, to speedway success and riches)

Reach for the Sky (Real life story of Douglas Bader WW2  RAF hero who lost both legs)

Ice cold in Alice is great but must be decades since I saw it

And Douglas Bader must have seen that several times since seeing it at the movies

Would that be the 60's or 50's when it came out

Grumps - "Ice Cold in Alex" is one of my all-time favourites!  Definitely, absolutely would be on my list of "best" old movies if I thought of it at the time.  Thanks for giving it a mention. :thumb:

Ahem-- Don't forget  "Wages of Fear"

Willco

Wages of Fear's a great movie,Willco. One of my all time favourites. The tension never lets up from the time those trucks drive off.Director Clouzot even manages to take a swipe at American corporate imperialism. Yves Montand has acted in some excellent movies.Another of his movies worth watching is The Confession, directed by Costa-Gavras of 'Z' fame and set behind the Iron Curtain.Cheers.

Argh... so many good oldies...

Agree with many of the ones posted so far.

One of my all time fav "old" movies is Duel.

Love how it sets the mood with the intro as the car leaves the house, then through the suburbs, out on the freeway and in to the desert highway.

The monologue going on inside his head as the truck starts to terrorize him, the look of the crusty old truck, the doubt in his head whether it's actually happening or if he's just going mad etc etc.

Car themed movies:

Driver

Gone in 60 seconds

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot

Bullitt

SciFi:

The day the earth stood still

Time machine

Journey to the center of the earth

War of the worlds

Demon seed

Horror:

Psycho

Texas chainsaw massacre

The Exorcist

Jaws

Other:

Telefon

Dirty Harry movies

Guns of Navarone

The bridge on the river Kwai

The great escape

Cool hand Luke

Runaway train

And more....

A lesser known Hitchcock movie called Lifeboat with Tallulah Bankhead starring.
