Anyone using an Ortofon SPU cartridge tracking at less than 3g?

I tried this the other evening with my Meister Silver tracking around 2.7g and preferred it over 3g and 3.5g.

Ortofon recommends tracking between 3-5g so I was surprised at how it sounded at less than 3g. Image density was a bit less but flow and soundstage was great.

Any other SPU users care to comment on your experiences?

My SPU Classic has a suggested range of 3-5 gms. I track it at 4 gms and found when I went below that the highs were bright/brittle. So have not done much in the way of experimenting.

I also run a Meister SPU occasionally and run it at around 2.8gm for best results, I wonder whether they're slightly more compliant than the older models?

Interesting that you are having similar results!

They must be more compliant. I wonder why they still go with the 3-5 g advice though. May be we just prefer them to sound a bit more holographic and detailed.

BTW: what is your main cart if you only run the Meister occasionally?

Yes i like it slightly more detailed, the SPU has enough fat in the sound to cope with a little less VTF.

I use a rebuilt Decca ffss IV as my main cart
