betty boop Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 about 10 years ago musical fidelity brought out the A5cr pre pwr combination, below a couple of under the hood shots and also front and back, front, rear, both were quite well featured and dual mono designs, with the pre amp having a good quality MM/MC phono stage. plus htbypass, and fully remote controlled. the power amp was a grunty thing with 8 sankens for each channel capable of 250 wpc. Both also featured choke regulation hence the number of power supplies in the chasis. this was mf's first range coming from taiwan, and the good thing was in components no difference from the made in uk designs prior. there was no drop off in fit and finish or quality or reliability ( I owned both pair for nearly 10 years without issue). on the used market these days both would be a huge bargain
betty boop Posted June 15, 2014 Author Posted June 15, 2014 hi firefly, they retailed for $4k a piece, price would depend on usual things, supply and demand, age and condition, have seen them go for anything upto around $2k a piece. The current replacement in the M6pre pwr is really a bit more than a cosmetic upgrade and retail for a bit more than the A5s did. So on the used market the a5cr can be excellent buying check the usual places, ebay, gumtree, here in the for sale section, dealers second hand trade ins etc. they do pop up
David.M Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 +1 with everything Al says about these, I had my pr for several years & they performed faultlessly driving MA GR20s and then 802Ds. When I was upgrading I loaned some Electrocompaniet AW400 mono amps & dual mono pre, imo the A5cr pair held their own against the EC combo (around $26k) driving 802Ds. 1
