943 Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) Before After Before 😊 After 😠B&W CM5 to PM1 upgrade. All 2nd hand. All like new. All good. PM1s are a little on the bright side with the Pioneer AVR but very detailed. One of them has a dent in the tweeter. Any idea how to un-dent it? Edited June 10, 2014 by 943 1
Monk Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Man, it's amazing the difference a coat of paint makes!
943 Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Yeah, and I chamfered the top corners a bit to get a different look. Think it turned out alright.
progladyte Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 He bought those nice sharp chisels from Bunnings. Nice result! I have some 602 S3's in my study and wouldn't trade them for the world. Love their sound.
mwhouston Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I've seen a vacuum cleaner used to suck dings out of dome tweeters. Control the hose and move in very slowly.
Guest Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Empty toilet roll & suck! Sounds like an interesting night in.....
Telecine Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 You can purchase a new tweeter diaphragm from B&W for $69,95 USD: http://bwgroupsupport.com/parts/price-avail Sellotape applied carefully and lifted off carefully might get it into some sort of reasonable shape in the meantime.
bwhitesox Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) Dont do the vacuum cleaner as that can suck the whole tweeter out, Try the toilet roll or you can stick a little blutack or double sided tape to it and gently pull it out. Edit: My man above has the answers Edited June 10, 2014 by bwhitesox
943 Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 Some late night research says sticky tape is the way to go so I'll give that a try tonight. No keen on sucking someone's 2nd hand tweeter.[emoji15] So - this is just a dust cap is it and not an integral part of the tweeter I.e. Doesn't actually create any of the sound?
bmc Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 No, It is not a dust cap. It is the tweeter's diaphragm which vibrates to create the sound, so be careful! 1
943 Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 Thanks Bmc. Just had a look through the service manual (thanks for the link above Telecene) and I can see how it's part of the tweeter assembly. Some reading last night suggested it was a "dust cap" - but this may have been referring to other speaker models. I was reading generally about fixing tweeters that have been poked. Quite a few out there.....so says the internet.
Juicester Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 never mind the pioneer avr (which is not doubt holding your lovely speakers back) - you need to get those puppies on some stands and away from the walls to hear what they REALLY do.... even something like this could bring improvement.... http://www.awave.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=134_171&products_id=4980&osCsid=0b748ec9cfde2b14e6138d7fb0d50ce9 Have you tried playing with putting foam bungs in the front ports? This migh help smooth out the response if you can't move the speakers off the wall any farther.....
MKSOUND_HT Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Looks awesome!!!! Would definitely be keen to seeing some stands on those speakers. I use a set of these from Selby.com.au http://www.selby.com.au/pair-of-selby-600mm-heavy-duty-speaker-stands-black-ap3363.html

There are some nuts on here that think that is the dustcap but it isn't so yea be a little gentle with it. 1

Early days yet - I'm keeping an eye out for some current model, 2nd hand Rotel kit available for local pickup (in Sydney) and then work out how I do the HT bypass thing. (I know, lots of info on the interweb about this). Still want to play the kids blu rays on the weekends and then music for me during the week. I need to move some old furniture out of the way before I get some stands as there's no room at the mo - so they'll have to sit on the TV cabinet for now. I like the Selby stands - thanks for the link, will check them out. I've never been one for buying anything 2nd hand (I like shiny and new) but I'm kind of liking the savings after buying 2 sets of used speakers. Will keep an eye out for some nice 2nd hand stands now.
LogicprObe Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 I've seen a vacuum cleaner used to suck dings out of dome tweeters. Control the hose and move in very slowly. Don't do it. Try a drinking straw and suck on it.

943 Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 Pre-outs : Tick New kit fixed gain : ?? Thanks for the tip. Now, to the sucking.....here's the score: Straw and lungs : 0 Sticky tape : 1 Success! Pulled the lump out with sticky tape. Still a very minor crease in it but happy with the result.
