Guest yamaha_man Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Well as some of you know I'm about to make the big move to the new house. My room has 12 dedicated 20A lines. I was wondering how I go about changing a few of these power points to accept US power cables, adapters aren't wanted. I think Shunyata makes decent ones but not 100% sure. Thanks in advance.
Sir Triode Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Isn't illegal to have them installed? You might void your house and contents insurance.

You will have to do it yourself because a licensed electrician will not do it because it is illegal. They would risk losing their licence. I am not moralising here just stating a fact.
Guest yamaha_man Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Does anyone here have them in their house? Any info would be great. Cheers.
Malcolm Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Does anyone here have them in their house? Any info would be great. Cheers. I think a friend has them , I'll ask him how he found the difference . Cheers
Guest yamaha_man Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 I think a friend has them , I'll ask him how he found the difference . Cheers Thanks mate, please ask him how his insurance sees them.
Malcolm Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 (edited) Thanks mate, please ask him how his insurance sees them. They wouldn't cover . How many years and how much coin do you have to play in the courts . Cheers Edited June 8, 2014 by Malcolm
Sir Triode Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 It would probably be cheaper to convert all of your power cables with Furutech AU male plugs than risk installing USA sockets into your home.
Guest yamaha_man Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 It would probably be cheaper to convert all of your power cables with Furutech AU male plugs than risk installing USA sockets into your home.Hesitant to do this when they are the 4 figure variety.
Sierra Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Unless I am missing something here ... What about the voltage difference? USA is120V Do the devices have switchable voltage inputs for 240V? ...
Krispy Audio Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 The in-between option is to use unswitched AU outlets. Interestingly a good source for these is in NZ. I've got one customer who has changed his outlet to US, did it himself of course, and reported an improvement. It was either a Shunyata or Furutech one (can't remember), annoying that they don't make AU ones. I believe they'd be a huge success here if anyone did make a high-end AU one...

Jventer Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 http://pdl.com.au/product-details.aspx?rcat=products&catid=674&id=932 10 Amps only ? There is a nice thread when Alistair asked about these things - don't know what he ended up with. http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/40384-unswitched-wall-outlets/
Krispy Audio Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 With 12x dedicated circuits, how many amps per circuit would be required? I doubt more than 10!!
alistairm Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 I ended up with the PDL outlets. 13.21 kiwi dollars each from https://www.electricaldirectltd.co.nz/
LogicprObe Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 I've made boxes up before using the US points and then plugging them into ours...................easily removed and hidden away............just in case. 1
Malcolm Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Yam Man ,I use these rated at 32A ,if I have to worry about a switch then I have shite power supplys in my amps Cheers
Guest yamaha_man Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Mine are 20A single power points but Aussie. Looking at purchasing some power cords with US sockets hense the thread.
Guest guru Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Unswitched outlets are available from j r Turks, made by clipsal, used in distribution boards and commercial installations.
LogicprObe Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Some items are only available for purchase if you are a licensed electrician. I know 'piggy back' plugs are on the list but not sure about unswitchable outlets.
Midori Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 So the question is are the unswitched outlet legal? Does all outlets need to be approval? I know this is true with likes of electrical applicances and maybe power boards. Otherwise, something like this might work : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-Pin-AU-2-Pin-US-EU-Socket-White-Square-Wall-Outlet-Plate-AC-250V-16A-/111385395992?pt=AU_Building_Materials&hash=item19ef164318 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Repairing-Power-Connector-3-Pin-AU-Plug-Socket-Wall-Plate-AC-250V-16A-/111380616393?pt=AU_Building_Materials&hash=item19eecd54c9 I might call up an electrician and ask.
Gee Emm Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Outlets do not need to be switched but they do need to be approved. As do powerboards. Sourcing unapproved, cheap & NASTY outlets from outside Oz? If you house burns down, just hope it burns to the ground & destroys all evidence of your non-approved plugs & sockets. Otherwise known as a "get out of paying" ticket to your insurance company.

Just as a reference, the pdl ones refered to in an earlier post? I would assume that the nz and Aussie standard is similar, if not the same. Edited June 20, 2014 by coeuslee
