The June 2014 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company.

Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests.  It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition.  And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

For June, we are very pleased to say that Bill McLean of McLeans Smarter Home Entertainment will be presenting.  Bill’s web site is at http://www.mcleans.info/home-entertainment/home.do

Bill will be presenting a complete system comprised of the following:

DeVore Fidelity 0/96 loudspeakers.  Refer to http://www.mcleans.info/shop/productDetails.do?productId=225177.

These DeVore speakers have been getting excellent reviews around the world.   The O/96 model is also known as the Orangutan.   They have 96 db sensitivity and more importantly, 10 ohms nominal and 8.75 ohms minimum impedance, so they are easy to drive.   Refer to the review on Stereophile at http://www.stereophile.com/content/devore-fidelity-orangutan-o96-loudspeaker.  To quote Art Dudley from this Stereophile review (Dec 2012), he says “My own view is simpler: The O/96 is neither a budget version nor a luxury version of anything else. It's an extremely well-crafted loudspeaker that achieves a combination of strengths that is, as far as I know, unique. The O/96 is distinctly easy to drive with low-power amplifiers, yet it's clearer, wider of bandwidth, and more spatially accomplished than most other high-sensitivity loudspeakers.  Colorful yet uncolored, the DeVore Orangutan O/96 is the loudspeaker many of us have been waiting for. Yes, an old Western Electric horn or even an Altec Valencia has more punch and drama, and Quad ESL has even more clarity and nuance of texture and timbre. But the O/96 gives a lot of everything and sacrifices little of anything. I'm thoroughly, giddily impressed.† Art Dudley is usually less effusive than that, so these speakers must be good!

LM Audio LM-219IA Integrated Amplifier.  Refer to http://www.mcleans.info/shop/productDetails.do?productId=237651

This “Line Magnetic Audio†Integrated Amplifier is a 24 watt Single Ended Class A amp with 300B driver tubes and 310A input tubes.  It has adjustable bias via built in meters.  Negative feedback is adjustable and defeatable.  Power output is displayed via meters.  It has two power transformers for dual mono operation, and  point to point wiring throughout.  The company is based in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, China.

PS Audio Direct Stream DAC.   Refer to http://www.psaudio.com/products/directstream-dac/

This DAC offers a pure 100% single bit DSD based D to A Converter with a passive output stage and resolution perfect volume and balance controls.  It has a simple, direct signal path with only one master clock and offers excellent immunity to jitter from sources.

Modified Oppo BDP-95 player.   For the front-end, Bill will be bringing a BDP-95 player modified by Joe Rasmussen to Level 3 standard.   Refer to http://www.customanalogue.com/jlti_multiplayer.htm.   (We will also have a monitor on hand to allow us to play music from USB flash drives in our BYO session.)

Auditorium 23 cabling.   These are musically, harmonically and texturally rich cables.  Not to mention affordable!  For speaker cables, refer to http://www.mcleans.info/shop/productDetails.do?productId=225406.  For interconnects, refer to http://www.mcleans.info/shop/productDetails.do?productId=225407

This will be a digital only system.   Bill will be presenting his system with some of his music played from his Mac.

The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO.   Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all.  So bring along your favourite music on CD, SACD or USB flash drive.  Sorry, no vinyl this month.  All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting.  We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played.  Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind.

Guests are always welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound.  We will welcome you at the door.

Venue:  Epping Creative Centre
Address:  26 Stanley St, Epping

When:  Sunday 15th June 2014

Doors open 1pm
Meeting starts at 2pm

Best regards,

Tom Waters

This should be interesting...I'd love to hear the de Vore's.

What price does Bill have on them Tom?

I'm pretty keen on hearing them and the Direct Stream DAC

good question for Bill McLean, give him a call

on the surface they look similar a similar size to the UK Note pair we had at the club not long ago which I really liked the sound

96 db sensitivity is at the other end of the scale to Maggies for example, am wondering on the 0/96 Orangutan sound signature

I'm pretty keen on this

The O\96s get some great reviews. I also have heard the Audio Note look-a-likes powered by an AN 845 amp. Best sound from any system I have ever heard.

I actually haven't read any reviews as I usually don't for unfamiliar speakers I'm soon to hear for myself

I'm very keen to hear the de Vore's. Well out of my price range but a speaker I've been curious about ever since I read about the Stereophile review.

As an infrequent visitor to the club it might be time I became a member, the music choice is always pretty interesting.

I am beginning to think I should stay away this weekend. I keep seeing Victor's Wavac In the FS thread at a very reasonable price and justify not buying as I have no speakers to do it justice. Surely it would be a perfect match for these speakers.

A three part review on Dagogo gives them big wraps.

I suggest reading all but Here is part 2 http://dagogo.com/devore-fidelity-orangutan-o96-loudspeaker-review-part-2

Also very keen to hear the PS Audio Direct Stream DAC.

This will be my first time at the meeting, I'm looking forward to hearing the PS Dac and listening to the O96 and hopefully some new interesting music.  I have seen reviews of the DeVores as they are a popular pairing in the UK with some of the Naim gear. Great to see somebody bringing them into the Country.

You won't regret buying Victor's Wavac - It sounded sublime in his setup.

Thanks Bill, It must have been a huge job to bring the gear down and setup. Unfortunately the valves on your large amp didn't work BUT thankfully you had a backup.

I can only imagine how good those speakers sound with an amp higher up the food chain (ie, more than $2.5k) and will definately drop in when I am next up at the Central Coast. Overall I really enjoyed the first half session (had to leave early) and would love to see more of the PS Dac and O96 speakers.
