huxmut Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 (edited) This months Silicon Chip mag had a quater page ad for their own design "HI-Fi Speaker" Not much in the way of details, but plenty of hype. Ad had things like - Is this the best Hi-Fi speaker in the world ? Probably Is this the most efficient speaker in the world ? Most likely etc, etc Next months Silicon Chip mag has the details, and i have foolishly left my copy of the mag at work so I cant provide a scan of said ad until Tuesday In the picture it appears to be a 15" woofer with a horn tweeter.... Any one know of it ? Thoughts ? edit - scan of ad is below Edited May 13, 2014 by huxmut 2

Any one know of it ? Thoughts ? I jumped the gun a little all excited by the ad also and bought a couple of Beyma 12" coaxial drivers. 98db woofer and 105db titanium dome concentric. Cost me $1400 shipped. It appears some thing like a 30 to 40ltr box and a medium size port will get it singing. Waiting on the drivers. 2
huxmut Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 OK, cool. What about crossovers ? any details on those yet ? I only scanned this months issue, so i didnt see the details on drivers :o
mwhouston Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 There are no details yet from Silicon Chip. For me I'm going to have three switchable 4th order Linkwitz Xovers: 1.2K, 2K, and 4KhZ on the tweeter section only. The woofer section will run full spectrum. The woofer naturally rolls off at 4KhZ. I will have three switchable pads on the tweeter: 0db, -3db and -6db all switchable. 1
huxmut Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 That sounds good. You have me all excited now too This site is dangerous to thesavings account :o 1
huxmut Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Are those the same drivers as will be in the SC kit ? Either way, Look rather awesome Heres a scan of the advert they had in this months mag I cant imagine it's a problem to scan the mag, but if mods/admin dont think this is appropriate please delete 1
mwhouston Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 No they are not. They are saying the 15" driver is made in Australia. I think my drivers are made in Spain.
huxmut Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Jumped the gun alright :o hehe I guess it is all the same principles ? I wouldnt mind having a go at this build. Just have to wait till next months mag 1
mwhouston Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I have resivation about how "hifi" a 15" driver and horn tweeter will be. But lets not forget the JBLs of the world which have made huge drivers and horns true, very efficient hifi. Because one of my amps only produces 0.5W a very efficient speaker is a must. And it's all the better if the driver is a high performance type. What I liked about the Beyma was the domed titanium concentric tweeter @ 105 db. This tweeter should sound better than a horn but once more I'm jumping the gun. 1
huxmut Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 i have only ever listened to horns for short periods of time and not in an ideal environment, so i have some worries about the sound too.... still, they are talking it up a fair bit. i'm not keen to be a test pilot, but you only live once 2
Newman Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) I love to see local DIY designs coming through, so I really look forward to it. Thanks for the heads up huxmut, I probably would have missed it. The 15" aussie driver might be a Lorantz? They do drivers to spec IIRC. 300 W for 120 dB equates to maybe 96 dB/W. Yes, the advert doesn't specifically say that: I deduced. That horn looks a lot like the Eminence APT-150S conical horn with constant directivity. That would be great: a CD horn is IMHO the best compromise. It would need a tailored crossover network EQ for flat response, which would explain the 96 dB efficiency I suggest above, instead of 105+. Anyway, the lower efficiency (compared to 100+ that some might dream of) enables the realistic possibility of very deep bass output, as claimed, which would be impossible with a 100 dB bass unit. Bring it on! Edited May 13, 2014 by Newman 2
Newman Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 What's the bet the June issue will only be Part 1? 4
tubularbells Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Yeah thanks for the post as I also would have missed it. Looks great so far (love the old school look) so hopefully it will sound ok too. Seeing as its a SC project it should also have a realistic price so im VERY interested to see how this progresses.
Gregor Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Its a very small horn to match with a 15" driver, it will be interesting to see where the compromises are.

hochopeper Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 What's the bet the June issue will only be Part 1? I doubt you'll get good odds on that bet Newman. 2

But lets not forget the JBLs of the world which have made huge drivers and horns true, very efficient hifi. My system has 15" drivers (also made in Australia) and a "horn tweeter" (well, waveguide and compression driver) and it sounds OK.. still need to polish off the crossover to get it optimum, it's a DIY work in progress. not to mention the "four π" http://www.pispeakers.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/105 and Gedlee Summa http://www.gedlee.com/summa_.htm .. amongst others. 4

And too small to cross over cleanly to a 15" driver. I wonder how many will end up with DIY tractix or Le Clercs. Or Azuras?? Edited May 13, 2014 by thoglette
thoglette Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) Looks like a honker. I'm going to (hopefully) cut short some discussion here. "Honking" (horn sound) is a result of discontinuity in the horn either causing reflections within the horn[1] or difraction within the horn[2]. Reflections can be seen as peaks/troughs in the frequency response. Refraction is a little tricker and result in "Higher Order Modes (HOM). HOM are waves that do not travel down the axis of the device but instead propagate by bouncing off of the walls" [2] which effectively have a different path length to the primary signal.. Jean-Michel Le Cléac'h and Dr. Earl Geddes have done a fair bit of work in recent decades on this. Lynn Olson has dragged much of the state of the art theory (including Linkwitz's work) together in his "Beyond the Ariel" project. Which is now well over a thousand pages on DIY Audio (There's a fun job for someone to do in summarising the results!) So before we get into a "Horns suck" "No, Horns Rule" debate, please try and come up to date first. Newman Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I was more going to debate that I don't think it's a honker. Well familiar with Geddes, long relationship with dear late JM, but there is more than one way to skin a horny cat. If you want to be SOTA, don't get this kit. Simple. Try 4 way horns, active amps, DSP, and a course in laying concrete. See you in 6 years. This kit is more about what you can do with high efficiency and a defined budget cap, and still have a lot of fun with the result. I'm looking forward to it. 2

Diffraction CD horn. And I second that it's too small to cross to a 15. 1

Doing this will mean that the tweeter and the woofer will not be in phase over the region where they overlap (due to the very different transfer functions) 1
