Who's the Rhodes scholar that develops the ATO website????

What is it with crap web sites? There are so many around. My work has a portal for students to enrol and the like and it is barely usable. I know it can be a hell of a lot better because there are some good, well designed sites around. But they seem to be outnumbered by really badly designed web sites which are a nightmare to navigate and often grossly inconsistent.

Tried finding something on our local council site a few times.

Impossible.

Or the section I want is "closed for maintenance".

Which makes me picture 8 blokes standing around a computer drinking coffee wearing hi-vis vests.

And one in the doorway with a STOP / SLOW sign.

At the other end of the scale, we had a water leak out the front of the house a while back.

Once I told them it was on their side of the water meter it was all go go.

Had barely put the phone down before 4 blokes and an excavator rolled up.

It's easy to blame the consultants, but often the client themselves do a good job of stuffing things up by not taking the advice they're paying for, and for allowing design by committee.

Right.  Ok.

I work closely with the previously mentioned project   (and am not surprised you have the issues you do)    ;)

I've worked in Tax, and now Local Govt.

The ATO site is nigh on impossible to find what you're looking for. It's easier to google search and use someone elses page, and make sure it references the piece of legislation or ruling you need.

Uncanny. We only ever have three blokes around the computer, though. And you can choose which hi viz colour you want to wear.  :D

Because they are designed by extremely intelligent people with absolutely no brains at all ie. eggheads who like to show off. They're not quite sure which garment goes on first though - is it underpants or trousers ???

So much training and informational material is 'smarted up' instead of 'dumbed (simplified) down'.

Where are the ten FAQs at the beginning ? The questions/facts/answers that are most relevant ? What is the core of the topic or subject ? Oh no, we don't want to help people - we want to babble on with extraneous fluff and padding and at the same time assume a level of underpinning knowledge that doesn't exist.

The circular linking and weak, unclear content is what maddens me with the ATO website. To do A click here > go to page that has pretty much nothing to do with what you want to do > see strange allusion to something similar to what you wanted to do > to do A click here? > end up in section about self help > OK, thanks for nothing but lets try it > sorry, self help is closed at the moment > FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Good luck, I hate that site. And many others.

Yeah.............I haven't done last year's tax because you can't use a form for the Business and whatever............you have to do it online and my Auskey doesn't seem to want to work.

Pain in the arse!

So when I reformat my computer soon, I assume the key will be lost and I'll have to try again, I suppose.

It's usually pretty even...........could be as grand either way.

Before, I'd just print the forms, fill them out and send them off!

Now I cab get had copies of 2 of the forms I need but not the Business and Professional Items!
(I should just print the example one off and send it.................but I don't want a revenge audit for being a smart arse!)
