For sale is stunning set of Gale GS401A chrome speakers.  Even by today's standards the GS401 speakers are still highly desirable and capable of embarrassing many modern 'hi-end' speakers.

This particular set is a very late production run and has been thoughtfully and properly refurbished.

The mid and bass drivers have had the surrounds replaced with all aspects of the drivers assessed and tested by a technician.

The Celestion Ditton HF2000 tweeters were dismantled checked, reassembled and measured.   The technician advised these were the best 'used' HF2000's he had encountered as the voice coils appeared like new with no evidence of being over driven.

The crossovers were dismantled with all caps and resistors measured and those that were out of tolerance replaced with NOS parts to retain the 'authentic Gale sound'.  The original attenuators were replaced with superior sealed units to help prevent future airborne corrosion, and prevent the risk of the original units further corroding and becoming distorted.

The cloth has been replaced with top quality B&W speaker cloth.

The chrome ends are original, but the very best i have seen on any Gale speaker.  They have some minor marks on the bottom and rear edges, with some tiny pitting on a couple of the rear edges.  These minor flaws are difficult to locate.

These are located in Perth and prefer would local pickup.

Cheers

Pete

I agree with Steve: Beautifully presented FS: advert Flemo

Such a fantastic looking bit of kit. Thankfully I'm totally removed from the seduction of these as I've been told that any Sansui driving these is a rubbish match made in hell apparently...phew, thank god for small mercies eh...I'd hate to become a collector or anything.

GLWTS.

Beautifully presented FS: advert Flemo, speakers look awesome and deserving of the price asked.

Steve.

Thanks Steve.  I think with this sort gear it's worth going into detail about the work that's been undertaken.

Thanks Luc.  Yes they do have a look about them that makes them stand out.

I'm sure you would have mentioned it, but don't suppose you have the chrome stands too?

No mate I don't have any stands for these.

Flemo,

A lovely job again.

Nice to see such fresh looking midrange cones. In my experience if they look clean and original like that they sound great.

If only people knew the work involved in this sort of job!

These sound great with an ME75 up them, they want current into them, to get the bass fast and kicking hard, never forget hearing the "The Boys of Summer" from the Don Henley CD it was quite something for such an old design, sound better standing upright, tweeters inside to get better imaging, sideways they look better but image is comprimised. The sound reminds me along the same lines as a good pair of Yamaha NS1000's

Need to keep those mid and HF level pots wipers clean, better still measure them and then sub them with the correct fixed resistors once you've found the balance you like

Art Vandely's super hotted up ME75 would be excellent on them, I think I heard rummors he may sell it to make way for bigger ME projects.

Also "Sunset Grill" from the Don Henley CD

Cheers George

I already have 2 pair of flemo-restored chrome Gales as well as a pair of the timber ones.   I'd urge anyone sitting on the fence about these to just buy them.  IMHO, they're excellent value and streets ahead of mucking around with an unrestored or badly restored pair.

I bought 2 sets of reproductions of the original chrome stands from the UK a year or two ago.  They're excellent quality and virtually a "must have" in terrns of authentic appearance.  I can find more info/links if anyone needs them.

Alternatively, they can be stood upright on low, rigid stands as George suggests  for optimal sound quality.

(Paradoxically, I've heard NS1000M's were generally used horizontally as studio monitors and they're meant to sound better like that.  I think I'd get some strange looks if I set up my Gales vertically and Yamaha's horizontally. )

Anyway, please someone buy these before I'm tempted further - you really can't go wrong. :thumb:

Thanks Jon, yes indeed there is a bit of work and expense involved in faithfully restoring GS401A's.

Hi George, I too agree that the GS401's sound better standing upright, which is how I have them set up in my system.

The original HF and LF attenuators are quite inadequate IME, which is why I upgraded to quality modern sealed units that much are less prone to airborne corrosion.

I have always preferred them horizontal. To me they sound seamless that way-and that seamless presentation where all the drivers seem to work as one is where the Gales have it all over most other speakers. There is also the benefit of having the tweeter and midrange vertically aligned that way.The 402s sound better vertical but they have a much higher woofer/midrange crossover point so it makes more sense for the woofers to be in vertical alignment.

HI Pete.

Looks like a great restoration.  I have a pair which I bought new in 1979 which I am about to get restored for the second time (mainly a bass unit surround issue).

Anyway I am in the market for another pair of 401As and I happen to live in Perth which may be very convenient for both of us.

I am new to StereoNet so I am not sure how to correspond directly to work out whether you Gales are still available for sale.

Can you advise please?

Thanks, Iain.
