I see you also have Halcro amps. I know you are getting out of the bigger Wilsons but how did you find the combo? Halcros get great reviews.

I wasn't impressed with the Momentum\Wilson combo at the Melbourne HiFi Show last year. But then I only liked the Audio Note amp and 2-Way speaker combo for the WHOLE show. Maybe it was just me.

The Halcro dm is the last power amp anyone ever need own, I just hope they start making them again. The dm make the Sophia sing rather nicely, and effortlessly. Particularly since I got the Krell processor, the bass and coherency of the Halcro/Sophia combo is rather impressive for the relative diminuitive size of the speaker. You might read in reviews mention about the "Wilson sound", and having some experience with these speakers I now know what that means...they take time to break in, and time to fine tune, and time just to get used to the "Wilson sound". But it is time well spent, and eventually very rewarding. Particularly with finely honed electronics and well recorded content.

For those who aren't familiar with the Wilson sound, first impressions might not leave you with much impression, but over time and as you throw a variety of different content at it, you come to appreciate the speaker is not just reputation. You can't fairly audition Sophia over an hour, even perhaps several hours. You need several sessions before the "Wilson sound" eventually grows on you.

Try the Wilson's on a nice single ended Valve amp and you're there!!!!

I wasn't a massive fan of the momentum and wilson combo either - then again they're both amazing in their own rights - just perhaps not the right match.

I've seen guys run Sasha's with 8 watt 300B valves and get great results.

All the best with the sale.

I can't imagine there would be any valve amp better than a Halcro dm78, no? Certainly not one that comes anywhere near <-120dB THD @ 400 watts into 4 ohms. My problem is one of space, not performance. I want to free up the considerable space occupied by big amps and big speakers with a smaller footprint active monitor...I think the barefoots would come close sonically to what they will replace, but @ $22k USD/pair and audition not possible it's a bit of a leap of faith.
