raptor Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 I listened to a few yesterday trying to decide what to loan to Field. I decided on: E.S.T. - Somewhere Else Before Mary Stallings - Live At The Village Vanguard Sonny Rollins - Live In Japan Keren Ann - Keren Ann Anjani - Blue Alert Laverne Butler - A Foolish Thing To Do
raptor Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I received the latest Patricia Barber album this week. Nice album though not her best IMHO. My favourites are Cafe Blue on HDCD and Companion on XRCD. This one is RBCD but as usual recording quality is good.

Shirley playing Miles' songs from his acoustic period with: Roy Hargrove on trumpet Toots Thielemans (another favourite of mine) on harmonica Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums Neil, I think I'll have to seek that one out. You always have good taste with Jazz. I've been listening to Jazz at the Pawnshop (thanks Neil) Miles Davis - Kind of Blue John Coltrane - Blue Train and some of these new ones: Carmen Lundy - Self Portrait Great voice. Yoshio Otomo Quartet - Moon ray (thanks Jake) Fantastic sax Yamamoto Trio - Autumn in Seattle The piano and double bass are fantastic on this recording. 1
raptor Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Yamamoto Trio - Autumn in Seattle The piano and double bass are fantastic on this recording. I'll second the recommendation on this one. Not complex music but very pleasant and relaxing. Thanks for the introduction to it Scuzzi. I've got a few Carmen Lundy which I like, but I haven't really got in to her enough to recommend her.
hired goon Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 G'day, That's my favourite Shirley Horn album, closely followed by [...] Remember Miles. I saw that at the second-hand shop yesterday ... must go back and see if it is still available. --Geoff

Strong voice. John 1
raptor Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Hi Neil,I think Self Portrait is better than "Old Devil Moon". She is an acquired taste though. Strong voice. John I've got Old Devil Moon, Good Morning Kiss and Jazz And The New Songbook: Live At The Madrid. Self Portrait on XRCD is in my Elusive Disc wishlist as I feel I do not appreciate her as much as she warrants. I'm not sure exactly why but I will persevere:) I'll consider her my audio equivalent of single malt scotch; difficult initially but eventually extremely rewarding:D
raptor Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Over the last 6 months or so, I've been buying a number of female vocal albums on the MaxJazz label. The recording quality is good, and unlike some other "audiophile" labels so is the talent. I can recommend:

Nostro Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 After a big day out (no pun intended), with my son, playing sport from 8am until ~ 4pm+, I came home & played this: Pharoah Sanders Karma And listened to it blaring with all doors open & on repeat whilst doing some vegie gardening for about 1 & 1/2hrs. Now listening to some other stuff, which may get a mention in another thread. Digitally remastered, using 20-BIT Super Mapping. I have this also on vinyl, but as I was outside I thought CD was the go. Original sessions produced (of course) by Bob Thiele. Personnel including: Pharoah Sanders: tenor sax Leon Thomas: vocal & percussions Lonnie Liston Smith Jr.: piano (a great artist in his own right check out some of his albums under his own name). Richard Davis/Ron Carter: bass Julius Watkins: French horn James Spaulding: flute Etc The Creator Has A Master Plan - one of my all time fav jazz tracks!
iRog Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 First heard a track from this recently on DIGG Jazz and went 'wow!' I jumped on line to see what was currently playing and found it was 'Charles Lloyd - Rabo de Nube'. I hadnt heard of it but I bought a copy and went wow again - it's been a while since a new album has had that effect.
hired goon Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 G'day, That's my favourite Shirley Horn album, closely followed by Got this CD from the local second-hand emporium on Friday arvo. Noice. --Geoff
