Nostro Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 The Necks Townsville I'm never sure whether The Necks are jazz or some other 'sub genre' (ambient, minimalism etc), but usually they are found in the jazz section of a music store. Whilst I like all The Necks albums I have, I do not consider this to be one of their strongest efforts, although as a live album & just the one track (after a change of format with their previous release Chemist), this is well recorded & meanders just enough to keep ones interest. It probably requires a few listens to pick up the subtle nuances, is definitely rather 'dreamy' allowing the listening to conjure images of the Townsville beaches, waves & sunsets & yet at the same time rather majestic. I need to listen to it some more!
hired goon Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 G'day, I think Townsville is beaut, although I admit that it took me some time to really warm to it. More in the vein of studio album Aether than other live albums such as Piano Bass Drums. Gigs by The Necks vary wildly. Some are transcendent, some are experimental sound collages. I suggested to Lloyd Swanton (bass player for The Necks) at a gig earlier this year that The Necks should release each gig as a CD-R over the internets (like Peter Gabriel does). Would be cool (and by cool, I mean: totally sweet) if that came to pass ... --Geoff
Nostro Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Thanks Geoff, Glad to hear from another fan of this wonderful Aussie band. I have only seen The Necks twice & each time found them thoroughly absorbing. Would be amazing if Lloyd (Chris & Tony) follow your suggestion as I understand as per your description that each gig can be entirely different & potentially worthy of a release of its own. Will persevere with this album & as I originally said, I do believe it requires repeated listens. Cheers.
doobius Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I hadn't heard of these guys before. I've just been listening to some of their YouTube vids, and I gotta say, I like what I hear. Thanks for the tip.
jjeuring Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 I gotta thank you guys for some great ideas.....I have never been a jazz fan, but since hearing Patricia Barber's 'Live in France album, while getting a new pair of speakers.....I just cant get enough of female jazz singers and also now like trio's or quartets ( instrumental). Thanks again John
patjoy Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I just received Antiphone Blues by Arne Domnerus (K2HD mastering). As you might know Mr Domnerus is the saxophonist on the audiophile classic "Jazz at the Pawnshop". He is partnered by a church organ and it is recorded in the Spanga Church in Sweden. You will not hear a better three dimensional depth of recording. Unusual intrument pairing but it works. Simply stunning and an audiophile classic.
