One of my all-time favourite albums.

Miles Davis -

Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (Lift To The Scaffold):

Am searching for it on vinyl.

I am not at home so cannot confirm title, but I have a Miles Davis record with a french title, and from memory his songs are on side one, and Art Blakey ( the drummer ) is on side 2. Not sure whether the songs are from the soundtrack though, but after browsing through his catologue, I suspect that the music is from it.

AFAIK he only has one album with a french title. My vinyl version is a german pressing.

Great music too.

I will confirm in a couple of days.

EDIT. Just googled the title and came up with this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/512290

From memory I got mine off ebay about 2 yrs ago, and its amongst my fave miles records.

Hi

Just been playing Herbie Hancock's 'The new standard" & can only agree with AIA. As a nice contrast played Ray Bryant pno trio doing a tributes LP of jazz standards including Doodlin', Take the A Train, Little Suzie, Walking, Bag's groove, Blue Monk et al.

Both good in their own way

Cheers

Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um. One of the great bassists and this is is IMO one of his better releases. I have a remastered version with 3 bonus tracks.

Very reminiscent of The Bill Evans trio. Lovely detailed creative original playing by John Taylor but errs on being too laid back sometimes. The drumming is fantastic, and the production sublime (it's worth buying this disc for these points alone). Will keep audiophiles happy

G'day,

Picked up yesterday at the second-hand CD emporium:

Shirley Horn - "I Love You, Paris" -- whole lotta slow burning ballads, recorded live in Paris.

Very noice, very quiet, kicks the @rse of the current crop of sultry jazz chanteuses like Krall, D.

Sound samples here.

I've been giving heavy airtime to Norah Jones's last CD, Not Too Late. Does this even classify as jazz anymore? Some tracks have a decidedly country feel, and some... just feel like they're not jazz.

However, it's music that I've really taken to, what with it's lovely dark melancholy. Is there much else with a similar sound/feel? I've tried to explore vocal jazz before via Dianna Krall (simply because she's the most well known/often recommended), but that lounge jazz definitely wasn't my scene. Other Norah Jones was enjoyable, but this CD really makes me want to press play again.

I've listened to Norah Jones' last CD and I hope it will be. :D

It's not jazz IMHO ... it's mainly country/blues/ballads and I find it rather meh even considered on its own terms and not as a Verve jazz title. But if it floats yer boat then whacko.

Maybe you might wanna check out Cowboy Junkies, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Walsh, Allison Krauss, etc.

Hawsh :)

I've heard bluegrass/country type stuff before and it's generally not my scene. Allison Krauss, for instance, I definitely didn't like. I tend to prefer stuff with a more folky feel, or generally moody/melancholy.

Anyway, I'll get out of yer fancypants jazz thread now :D

Good taste, HG. I have 2 of her CDs but not that one. "Here's to Life" is my favourite and the title track continues to give me goose bumps. :)

Last FM continues to introduce me to new music and my latest resulting CD purchase is the self-titled "Blossom Dearie". In case she is new to you, she is an American jazz singer from the 50s who spent a few years in Paris, hence some French tracks on the album. A great voice and, yes, that is her real name!

The Flying Neutrinos : I'd rather be in New Orleans.

I love Ingrid's voice...... old time style.... but recent, and well made, recordings.. yum !!
