dimo Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Fair point, but once the warranty runs out and the thing stops working, the option of having spent an extra $50 on a quality second hand one will probably seem good in hindsight. Anyway, it's not my problem so I'll leave it at that. Completely agree, but that will be his mistake to make.
rocky500 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) I think you will find the sherwood an ok turntable. Should hopefully be a good step up from what you have been using until you are ready to move up to the next step. It most probably was the best one in your budget and wanting new. You also should not lose to much if you go to resell it down the track. Let us know how it goes when you have it all setup. Edited March 31, 2014 by rocky500 1
jefftobin85 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 I meant I will ask advice again when I need to upgrade the stylis, If you want to complain at me for not following peoples advice perhaps you should read what I actually asked advice for?$250 (including shipping) new with warranty and not vintage don't get all pissy at me when I don't follow advice that doesn't fit ANY of these categories
Keith Anderson Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Don't worry about some, they just think their advice is the only right advice. After all its advice and in the end its your decision. Enjoy the TT it will be much better than what you were using 1
manchu Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) don't get all pissy at me when I don't follow advice that doesn't fit ANY of these categories But you're getting good solid advice based on years and years of experience. Why on earth would you ignore it and be rude in the process? Here's an analogy. - I hear there's a pub selling pints for 50c. Can you give me directions? - Yes there is, but the pints are full of piss. I'd suggest you go somewhere else - I don't care you c0ck. I'll happily drink piss if it's cheap. Anyway...back on topic. My 2c is to either save more or buy used. Or even better, do both. Or...this might be worth investigating. Not sure if it's being made yet, or possible to get in oz. It's new, but if you import yourself there's probably no local support/warranty anyway. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/uturnaudio/the-orbit-turntable-0?ref=live Edited March 31, 2014 by manchu
rocky500 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Don't worry about them Jeff. Sometimes when you been into hifi for a while it is harder to look at some of the cheaper alternatives that are still great for some who have a tight budget. Its like walking into a very high end hifi store and asking them about Denon or Marantz etc and them telling you it is rubbish and you are better off looking at a 2nd hand (PUT IN BRAND) than buying that rubbish. Some people still find that the Denon is all they need and they can buy it new withing their budget.
Guest Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I can see where both parties are coming from here. Jeff wants a decent plug n play turntable and has found a cheap one. He wants the warranty - that's fine, I'm sure the unit will work for as long as the warranty is valid. If anything happens AFTER that, however, repairs will most likely be expensive. The people telling him to get a good, trusted secondhand turntable (not vintage, just second hand) are also right. Old(er) things were built to last and are easier to repair. For the extra $50-ish he would get a quality piece of gear which, if something should break, will probably be easily fixed and most likely outlast the slightly cheaper (but new) alternative. Also, Jeff says he has just started getting interested in vinyl. I doubt that he will stop collecting once he's started, and having a TT which will last for years and decades to come would be good in this case.

You may have missed this from Jeff I really cant stretch it anymore than $250, I will be able to upgrade at the end of the year, I just want something that will play records decently until then, The two I mentioned are the only ones I can find in my price range. Keep in mind I am sing a $40 target turntable right now so as long as its an upgrade from that I don't mind So I think this will turntable will be a good step up for now within budget and with warranty. He may get a lot of his money back if he upgrades later on at the end of the year.
Guest Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 No I didn't miss that. What the others were saying though was, to wait until he CAN afford the extra $50. Skip a carton of beer for a week and there's the extra $$$. Or whatever. He'll do whatever he wants to and what works for him. I was just trying to be devil's advocate there and show that everyone was right in in a sense. Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything, just trying to help.
mackeb Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I decided on the Sherwood and another cartridge when I get the money, will post for advice whenever that is lol Hey mate, Good step up on the Target special (Targee?). Anyway, head on over to Vinylengine and print out some alignment protractors and check the cart alignment ASAP. Should be OK from factory but just be sure. Isn't very hard to do and may save some tears later.
manchu Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) $239+ free shipping. Stanton T62 Direct Drive. I reckon this would be a bit better than the Sherwood. Could probably live with the included Stanton cartridge so it's probably cheaper. http://www.derringers.com.au/products/Stanton-T62-DJ-Turntable.html Obviously a DJ oriented turntable, but that's not a bad thing at this price point. Edit: A few reviews on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Stanton-Direct-Drive-Turntable-Cartridge-Pre-Mounted/dp/B001JY9MB4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top Negative comments are due to poor torque and/or pitch adjustment, which aren't a concern for you. It's actually a nice looking turntable too....if they didn't plaster 'Stanton' all over it. Edited March 31, 2014 by manchu
