New Sonus Faber Extrema 30th Anniversary Model

Recommended Posts

Most definitely "state of the art" as opposed the pure "art" of SF speakers of olde.

Me thinks the notion of referencing loudspeakers to the fundamentals of lute design is all but vanished from the marque.

Time (and ownership) changes all things I guess.

Old vs New, I wonder

These are just 18kg each the old one was 40kg each, big difference.

The old one had the Dynaudio Esotar tweeter which was and still is highly regarded.

The old version had the SIN CAP xover which was a pig to drive + 4 way damping adjustment on the passive B139, but with the right amp was magnificent, but this new one has something else

CROSS-OVER

Non-resonant “progressive slope†design, optimized amplitude/phase response for optimal space/time performance. “Paracross topology†topology. Cross-over: 2350Hz. Adjustable low frequency damping into 4 different level.

I'd like to hear an a/b between the two, my money would go on the old model which I loved to listen to, and the only dynamic speaker I'd replace my ESL's with.

Cheers George

more pics on the sonus website.

love the golden wood cheeks :)

thankgoodness some manufacturers still do absolute wonders with wood on their speaker cabinets rather than just boring painted boxes !

it probably a stunner of a stand mount. only one of 30 is coming to oz. so good luck getting to hear it :)

i know you wonder why they dont just make floorstander for the volume needed :)

It was a special project of 30 units only, and highly likely the production/development costs will exceed the sales revenue.

So why do they do it? Hopefully the technology that put this together will flow through to their other products in due course, and thus offset any losses on this project. I would be tempted by a speaker in this form-factor, as long as the price was sensible.

I'm a bit of a tragic for originality - even if these sound better there's a certain something about having something designed and voiced by the man the way that he wanted it

then you are not hearing mainstream but the individualistic work of a master craftsmen

such pieces (barring the inevitable wear and tear with age) are usually timeless and now irreplaceable as the man is gone

I wish I had a pair of the originals
