ASoN April meeting: Our good friend Cameron Keating from Maxmedia Distribution will embark on yet another road trip up to Sydney - Audi packed to the rafters - to showcase the latest Zero 1 design from German horn speaker specialist Avant Garde and the brand new AMR CD777SE 'Special Edition' update from UK company Abbingdon Music Research.

The Zero 1 features the latest technology from Avant Garde and is a design statement including high quality in-built amplification and advanced digital technology. AMR's new CD777SE features modifications to a number of circuits which have substantially elevated the already outstanding performance of the previous non-SE version.

Hope to see you there.

Date: Sunday 6 April 2014

Time: Starts 2.45pm to 6pm

Where: Epping Creative Centre (in the Epping Aquatic Centre Complex)

26 Stanley Road, EPPING NSW

Guests welcome.

Shuffle your work commitments around to suit JukKluk2 ;-))

We meet the first Sunday of the month, every month (barring Jan/Feb). Hope you can make it at some stage soon.

Cheers,

I'm sure Cameron will put on a great show, and those little Avantgardes are certainly intriguing! Look forward to hearing people's impressions of them from Sunday.

Looks like I'll go first. We had a good day with these. These are my opinions, I'm sure others will disagree, and make it known.

First we had the AMR with it's tube analogue outputs into the Zero's analogue inputs, which meant it had to A/D first before it being sent to the Zero's D/A, was ok but a little electronic and bass was a touch fat, then we used the coax digital out of the AMR (using it as a transport only) into the coax digital in of the Zero's d/a this was much better, (taking out the Zero's A/D conversion process out of the equation). Voices lost the sterile sound and bass was much tighter and punchier.

There could have been one of two problems in the first way we connected.

1: The AMR's tube stage maybe didn't impedance match the input of the Zero's analogue in (which the specs didn't say what it’s input impedance was)

2: Or it could of been that fact that Zero was converting the analogue from the AMR back to digital again, adding a second lot of A/D processing, I believe the latter, too much digital processing going on in the first.

So we left it with the AMR as a transport only into the digital input of the the Zero's

To me it was the second best sound we've had at Epping, first being last months Dynaudio presentation, but that was around 8 x the price.

I like the sound which had typical presence that horns give when we played instrumentals, I'm used to ESL's so I'm very susceptible to colourations, so when it came to vocals to me it sounds a little like they were in a cave, which didn't seem bother many who were listening.

Then after the tea break they pulled the speakers back so they were closer (1-2ft from the back wall) instead of 5ft out from the wall as before , I listened for one track and heard the bass lost definition and sounded one note'ish, knowing this will stay like this for the rest of the meeting I left.

Cheers George

i just think that we cant value the bass yesterday as the room's floor was playing rather lively.

i can hear the potential of being one of the best bass for commercial speakers though.

the placement near boundary have no merit btw, as horns have much less baffle step diffraction than usual direct radiator, and it could be 0 bstep, and the pole altered the right speakers response causing imbalance imaging.

the imaging is the biggest dissapointment for me even with initial setup, there's no clear separations between instrument, but it could be the room.

nevertheless i think its the best avantgarde speakers i ever heard

here are some photos from 6moons that might be interested :), as cameron said at the meeting, this speakers will be introduced at Munich Show 2014, so its practically making its premiere debut in Sydney/Australia last weekend :)

Thanks for the images Henry. Indeed it is an interesting speaker and as you pointed out, we basically got a world premiere at ASoN. I would have liked to have seen our usual stronger turnout, however the horrid weather might have put some off.

Cheers,

EK
