Hunger Games Catching fire

Recommended Posts

The second in the trilogy of hunger games was just released locally this weekend on blu-ray. Which watched last night with a short review below,

Hunger Games Catching fire - AUS Release - 5.1 DTS Master Audio

Movie - 3/5 - I was a little unsure of the first part of this series, and the 2nd part seemed to take what seemed an eternity to get going. It has a pretty dark feel to it, and while I probably prefered the feel of the first movie, I was glad when things finally get moving in the second movie

PQ - 3.5/5 - The dark feel to the movie probably doesnt help the use of dark/muted colours with some bright colours thrown in for contrast. ITs not a visually slpendid movie. Its not the sharpest for detail, certainly not one that reaches out to the senses with its visuals.

AQ - 3.5/5 - the audio is put to good use as a modern movie using it hdaudio surround track as should. Otherwise I dont recall any wow moments or anything just does its job to support the film and story

Overall - 3.5/5 - Am not sure I totally get this series. while watched and enjoyed it in sections, it leaves me in two minds...be interesting what others have to say..

taken a few screen shots from the movie as an indication of the picture quality of this blu-ray release..

I pretty much have the same impression of the series as you.

I did enjoy the first movie but failed to see how a Tournament to the death involving children was somehow established to keep the peace. Nevertheless the acting was superb and I was genuinely interested in the main characters and how everything would pan out. I had no real interest in the series and had never heard of it previously.

However I thought the 2nd movie was extremely drawn out to the point where I lost interest.

hi kellosus, I couldnt agree more, was very much in two minds of the first movie, the fundamental basis of it unsure off, but yes followed it, and kept the interest action/adventure wise. the second yes lost interest a few tiems just how drawn out it was ! and also the dark dreary feel of it didnt really help either. yes even more in two minds of the second movie. I see it getting some rave reviews though which just leaves me wondering !

I agree with you both

I saw the first one when mum and the kids went away and really enjoyed it.

So when the 2nd arrived and they were all away again, I eagerly watched it - again at the cinemas.....and left not exactly happy with what I had just seen. Agree with you Al regarding the 'grey' feel to it.

If mum and kids happen to be away when the 3rd comes out....I will wait until it arrives on bluray.

wasnt too rapt with the way the 2nd finished, kind of leaves you hanging. And yes not the kind of movies wife remotely interested to watch. so something I catch up with on blu-ray. as will do with the 3rd when comes out :)

Saw the first movie and bought the book series. What I enjoyed about the films, is the 3rd person narrative (it's a 1st person narrative in the book, so you kinda miss a lot what's happening around, 'cause she doesn't really know).

I was a bit disappointed by the picture quality on the cinema when I saw it last year, thought it had a slight veil of greyness over the image, a bit dull. I guess I'll pass on the bluray then.

I am very curious though about part 3 and the second part 3 (they're doing a Harry Potter 7 again).

yes agree re the PQ wasnt a stunner as such. definitely a bit grey and dull and a bit soft and veiled. was expecting more from what is a modern day mainstream release

Just saw it, and enjoyed it very much - edge of the seat all the way.

I cared about the characters and I thought the story very good (often futuristic thrillers try to hard and lose me half way through with their ridiculous plot tangles).

Beautiful costuming. Good use of (moderate) effects that don't try to overwhelm you.

I've never read the books, nor seen the 1st movie, so take that as you may....

  • 1 month later...

For some reason the Hunger Games films never took my attention much when they were at the movies but recently watched them on Bluray and found them really intruging. I think I was quite facinated with Socities opinion in the film towards fighting for entertainment. I thought to myself "that could never happen in real life" but looking back in the past with fighting in the Coliseum many were made to fight for their life with nothing more than a few minor weapons. Lets hope the past isn't a good indication of the future :(

We watched this at home on the big screen recently.

Interestingly, I enjoyed the 2nd film more than the first, except for that cliff-hanger end... wtf!?

Maybe I'm just gettin' old...

OT. It did remind me to revisit the best film Ms Lawrence ever did IMO, Winters Bone.

My girl is fairly exceptional in many ways, including this one... she was the one that wanted to watch it, then followed up by wanting to watch the sequel. Unfortunately we watched the second one first not knowing there was a first one, then watched the first one... We were part of the way into the second one when we realised it must be a multi part series. When we did watch the first one there was plenty of ok now I can see how that now makes sense in the second one.

Well I'm one of those weird people that read the book and loved it.

I love both the films too and as stated the second one finished in the right spot.

It doesn't deviate much from the book which I am also enjoying.

The fact that Jen is one of my favourite actresses certainly helps  :love
