MrHorsepower
Hi all, is my thinking right? Is it that simple? I want to use my existing Integrated Amp as a pre (If this is possible). Its only in a shed system (25 year old Kenwood) but want to use a Kenwood KM 209 (150 w) that I have sitting there. Will a line level converter get the job done? Cheers Michael. Hifiplus
Your integrated amp has to have pre-outs, which go through the volume control. Not sure what your end goal is here, there are plenty of good preamps going on ebay these days as people migrate to dacs for source control. Guest Hensa
If your integrated has pre-out and main-in connectors on the back panel (usually connected with a set of metal pins) you can remove those pins and run interconnects to your power amp. This removes the integrated's power amp section from the circuit.

Yeah, fearing that might have been the case =No Volume control. I have been looking out for a Cheap Pre for a while as It is only for a shed system I am reluctant to part with too many hard earned $. Cheers Michael There's nothing stopping you from using a line level converter... In fact, there are plenty of calculators on-line to enable you to wire your own voltage-divider network (using resistors) that will reduce the speaker-level outputs of your integrated amp to line-level signals. It's not an ideal situation in terms of outright sound quality, as you'll have the amplifier section from your integrated amp in the signal path too, but it most certainly can be done (whilst retaining volume control too). SteveC
If you only have one source then nothing simpler than this into your power amp. http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/accessories/products/control-freak
MrHorsepower
THIS WORKS...and sounds pretty good considering the age of the components. I just bought a $24 line level converter from Autobarn and It works fine, volume control works as well. I dont know if It would be wise using it in anything other than a Shed System but it does work.
