Upgrade speaker cable

Recommended Posts

At the moment I'm using a some cheap Chord Carnival SilverScreen cable and thinking how much am I missing out in detail and transparency in using this cheap cable.

Rest of system

Rega RP3, Benz Micro Ace SL, Music Surrounding Nova, Mystere ia21 and Hoyt-Bedford Type 4's. Standard Rega wiring to phono and Ortofon Reference 6NX RCA from phono to amp

How much do I need to spend to get a speaker cable that will match the system nicely

How longs a piece of string?

Seriously though, I reckon a couple of hundred spent on new cable or maybe the same amount on 2nd hand cable from here would be fine.

By system is a budget one and I've got a few different sets of cables all bar one are 2nd hand and the most I paid was $150.00(I think) and they had a  RRP of $450 or there abouts. I'm using Tellirium blues at the moment(I discerned an immediate improvement in my overall SQ when these where plugged in) and one day when I'm a bit more financial I'll be giving the Tellirium Blacks a go.

I'd suggest a cable with a lighter signature so as not to make the Mystere sound too creamy.  I used Clear Day Double Shotgun when I had the Mystere and Omega Super 6s.  It's not too expensive, comes quickly from the US and the owner is very easy to deal with.

I'm currently using Anti-Cables in a system of not dis-similar cost to your own and they do a fine job. I have a number of other speaker cables in the $100 to $200 range but the Anti-cables are my preferred ones for the moment and they set me back about $150.

Are the Anti-cables the stiff wires or are these still flexible?

They're the stiff wires. I find this useful as I can easily shape them away from the power cables.

You might like to try an inexpensive experiment, keitha.  Try some standard Cat5 or Cat6 cable - which will be:

  • cheap ($1 per m?) and readily available
  • 8 x 24g solid core wires
  • each wire PVC insulated.

1 jacket for '+' and 1 jacket for '-', to each speaker.

Or, just 1 jacket for each speaker, with 2 twisted pairs for '+' and the other 2 pairs for '-' (lower 'L' but higher 'C' - so should sound better if your amp can take the extra 'C').

If you like this sound, you can "move up" to teflon-insulated wires (like Belden 1585a) and improve it.

Regards,

Andy

I recommend trying Kanare cable. It is an outer with 4 wires inside. It comes in 3 different gauges and is cheap. I compared the 4s8 to cables costing $400+ and they sounded similar. The 4s11 will give more bass I suspect especially on long cable runs. I got mine prom a proffesional audio shop. ( for bands etc)

to be honest; i wouldn't waste money changing your cables until you've upgraded your gear further. The silverscreen is a pretty good cable in my opinion. Perhaps swapping to a cable that emphasises the treble more (maybe trying secondhand nordost) could help given that's probably the HB's weak point.

Easiest way to tell; hold a get together and ask a few people to bring their cables around for a little testing; that's always fun!

likw i said though, coin is better spent elsehwere imho. (i.e. a couple of nice big bass traps).

Well I bought some S/H DNM solid core cable, best money spent. I'm sure I can further but I felt the Chord was like having a sheet in front of the speakers, worked well with the MA's I had but the Hoyt's it didn't like. The DNM has opened up the top end more and given more transparency and air to the sound.

Moving in hopefully 2-3 months, house is being built and I will have my own room for music so yes bass traps will be probably invested in once I have the room sorted
