As someone who has never tube rolled, I know very little about this topic.

But, I have read on another forum that upgrading to these valves makes a considerable difference to pre-amp performance. I am mainly talking about the EAT Cool Valve ECC88, of which there is only one in my pre-amp but at a cost of around $200 is this a good investment? And what would one of these valves bring to the party?

I would appreciate your opinions on this product, or suggestions for other options.

Thanks,

Steve

The only way to find out how good they are is to buy one or a pair . Personally EAT tubes are over priced made nicely but over priced like most tubes .

Agree I've known users that have had trouble with EAT Tubes -and the Proprietors response-- I'd go with Emission Labs if you are looking at the EU.

Hi Willco

I never had trouble with their tubes but they weren't worth the money , are they still leasing fact floor space out of EML .

I like KR's but I might try some EML's .

Cheers

they are nowhere as good as their kt-88 brethren on which the company's reputation is based.

get some good nos like the other bloke said.

siemens, mullard....

or even some gold-pin tung-sols or jj's are good enough.

Thanks for the replies so far.

So it is basically a given that NOS tubes are better than newly made tubes from companies like EAT and others?

The seems to bit a bit of hype about the EML tubes, but I wasn't sure what the ECC88 or the 6922 tube is equivalent to in their product range. Some of these companies make it easy to compare tubes and others don't.

And what is the equivalent KR tube to the 6922?

I can find great comparisons of tubes on companies like "tubedepot" and others and EAT make it easy, but I'm a bit lost with EM and KR.

KR don't make many tubes and I think EML are the same .

Even buying NOS tube can be a hit & miss affair ,have fun trying different tubes but make sure the tube electrical parameters are the same when rolling .

tube depot sell the black sable cryo'ed jj's. have tried them (and still use them), they're not bad at all.

they also sell the nos mullard. haven't tried those, but they are pretty expensive.

It's a given that the best of the best of NOS are better than most newly made tubes.

There's crap NOS out there too - particularly those which are 6ES8 rebadged as 6DJ8

Do read the article - it is  long winded but does explain why a genuine 6922 / E88CC will be better than a generic ECC88/ 6DJ8

Some other substitutes/similars discussed on DIYAudio a while back

Thank you for this comprehensive information.

Gives me some great background info, now just have to find a trusted reliable source.
