MusicOne Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I see you are in Melbourne....I believe John Hall is your man....perhaps try Orpheus (PM) he might have John Hall's contact details.
Mr 57 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 John Hall is the man to trust with your 57's.He has had my 57's and 63's, and does a fantastic job. Highly recommended. 1
georgehifi Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 The king of ESL57's rebuilds in Australia were two people Otto Major (sadly now in a nursing home) and Chris Feillafe chris1f@optusnet.com.au PH 02-94172555 Roseville NSW still doing work on them and the amps as well making them even better also. A little history on these two "partners" Otto was the front man, and Chris was a bit of a recluse, but he did most of the R&D and technical work on the new coatings and ways to rebuild better panels than the original 57 ones. He also winds better transformers audio and ht for the quads. and builds awesome set amps as well. Cheers George 2
Orpheus Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 John Hall is definitely the man you want. I know all of the people referred to here. He's in Melbourne. His work is meticulous, his charges are very reasonable, and his knowledge of the speakers is second to none.
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Agreed. John Hall is the man. Very generous with his time and expertise. 1
brownemi Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 John Hall saved my life.....oops, no I mean he did a fantastic job with my 57's, his work is impeccable in terms of rebuilding everything that will stand the test of time all over again and his service is excellent. Nice purchase by the way ....a full Quad system......very lucky 2

skidstar Posted March 27, 2014 Author Posted March 27, 2014 Thanks for the info folks, have been in touch with John and will be on the road to restoration shortly. When I bought the set I was told by a few people that 57's were almost universally hated by women from their launch through to today,I of course had not told my wife about the purchase,I just had to buy them as they were a bargain. So I unload the car, leave the gear in the (half renovated) lounge/kitchen and hope for the best. Wifey appears……"What's all this?" Me; Ahhm,..nothing. Wifey;Looks like more hifi gear, and those heaters look fantastic, did you get them at the same place? Me;Errr, yes.Did you know those heaters are actually speakers, they were made in 1957 and are very famous, apparently they sound amazing. If you sit in one exact spot called the sweet spot it's apparently quite incredible. Wifey; What do you mean apparently? Can you show me? Me;Not right now, they need to be turned on very carefully and so do the amplifiers. Wifey;Well do it. Me;I can't,it needs to be an expert that turns these on or we might do a lot of expensive damage. Wifey; So who is the expert? And how much does he cost? Me;I'm not sure who he is,I haven't found him yet,but I have a feeling he might be a little bit expensive. Wifey; So you bought some hifi gear that you can't turn on? Me;Yes. Wifey; Can I at least see the sweet spot? Me;No,that's a place in space where your put your head,it's an area about the size of a watermelon apparently. Wifey; So if you pay somebody that you don't yet know a lot of money,he will stick your head in a water melon? My wife is a champ. 4
Mr 57 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Great tale, gotta love the "heater" loving wifes out there. You really should spoil us all and tell us how you came across such a booty.(the Quad gear that is ! ) Usually we hunt and compete for such treasures, totally green with envy. So this is your first hearing of 57's? You realise of course that you are now spoiled, and nothing will satisfy like panels. Again welcome to the dark side, and keep us all posted on the progress, John Hall is a true gentleman and you will enjoy doing business with him. Cheers
Telecine Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Good work Craig and I hope the restoration goes well. Keep the wife.

brownemi Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 They are also good for hanging wet laundry on during rainy days, she will find all sorts of use....good luck with your new domestic appliances, haha,
tesla13BMW Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Hi Skidster Not all wives hate them. Mine even loves the stacked ESL's in the lounge. But I too had people asking why we needed heaters in QLD!.
