denimhunter Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I heard the Shindo Latife field coil speakers recently and thought the sound was beguiling. It was like a pair of good electrostatics but with tight and tuneful bass. I would like to share other members experience and knowledge of field coil speakers.
denimhunter Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Sorry it should be Shindo Lafite! Spelling error 1

Krispy Audio Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I'm really interested in field coil speakers, given my love affair I'm having with 300b tubes at the moment (I liken field coils to the 300b of drivers).

I mean that they interest me, not that I am interested in acquiring some (at this stage). What intrigues me is why they are rarely used.
Guest guru Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Maybe read the forum guidelines about product promotion when not an sna sponsor.

Who ever know me will judge, I do not think your regards necessary . Sub Sonic Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) demmauhong, Perhaps your signature "Shindo user and distributor" indicates a vested interest? Regards, SS Edited March 14, 2014 by Sub Sonic

Upfront Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Rullit Field coil drivers seem to get a good reviews. I know of a WA member with a pair to put in a pair of azurahorns. Anyone else use them? He has a few different models. http://bit.ly/1eC4YYo
denimhunter Posted March 15, 2014 Author Posted March 15, 2014 Btw I heard the Lafite at Demmauhong. They are hard to come by and I was just glad to be able to hear a pair. I know others might have experiences with different mkes and models, maybe vintage ones. It would be nice to hear other ppl experiences rather than finger pointing.
Owen Y Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 A bit late here sorry... Field Coils (electromagnets) were used before good permanent magnets became widely available after WWII. So, it's a old-school way of generating a magnetic field. However there may be advantages in that you can adjust field strength, if desired, & with potentially some variation in sound...in a similar way that different permanent magnet materials (Alnico, ceramic, rare earth...) have a different magnetic field characteristics & therefore, some say, different sound style. You need to have an accompanying PSU of course. This is a modern-manuf field coil driver that I have - requires a PSU/s to supply ~145vdc at ~200mA current to ea driver, so they dissipate ~30 watts & get warm You can see the bulky magnetic coil winding required. All the vintage companies like WE, RCA produced F Coil drivers, requiring PSU voltages ranging from say 13v up to maybe 125vdc. They were used for woofers & mid-HF drivers. LogicprObe Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I haven't heard any new ones. My only experience with them was in old valve radios.
Guest atilsley Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I like the look of the 8 inch 'full' rangers from Germany, Voxativ. http://www.voxativ.com/en/fullrange-drivers/ac-x-fieldcoil-driver/ Also, Wolf Von Langer's Kilemenjaro drivers are truly world class... http://www.kilimanjaro-series.com/ For truly high end, consider Feastrex. http://www.feastrex.com/products.html Even Lowther dabbles in this - http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/ob2/2.html
BradC Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Anyone using electronics in the external magnet to reduce nonlinearities?
Owen Y Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Anyone using electronics in the external magnet to reduce nonlinearities? I'm no expert in the area of driver design but ..... I'm thinking that any signif distortion/non-linearities would be in the design of the magnet gap & VCoil...vs excursion, ie suspension design. Like any such driver I guess, FC electromagnet or permanent magnet. Cheers, Owen Dark Lantern blog - http://darklanternforowen.wordpress.com/ 1
Owen Y Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 And of course the Japanese are well up with the play... http://www.gip-laboratory.com/seihinhiend.html Cheers, Owen Dark Lantern blog - http://darklanternforowen.wordpress.com/
