I built this a few years ago.

Didn't put too much thought in to it and I will be rebuilding it sometime when I get a chance.

The 6X9 speakers share the same chamber and are way too big for it.

I'm thinking of rebuilding it with 4 smaller speakers sometime down the track.

It was made using what I had laying around at the time, and has seen quite a few outings on camping trips, beach parties (with auxiliary speakers) and in the backyard around the fire.

I will definitely be seeking some advice from the members on this forum when I get around to rebuilding it in terms of size, porting etc.

The wheels are from an old mobility scooter :)

Cheers mate, it works pretty well.

Dunno what wattage those speakers are, but they're pretty beefy.

The stereo is some old Sony XPLOD model.

Can't even turn on the loudness on it as the speakers go BLURP BLURP fighting eachother in that small space.

In the second to last pic you can see the two rows of screws and the backing plate indicating the size of the (way to small) chamber.

They need a lot more room than that.

They used to be mounted in the doors on my old Holden HQ one tonner.

I'd  get them going pretty loud before the rearview mirrors started rattling and the door trims fell off.

:P:D

Hahaha, love it. Looks like it should have it's own A.I. / personality and follow you around like a puppy dog trying to make you happy!

There's a few build threads around on these things.   I'm going to make one in the next year or 3 for camping and beaching, etc.

When I planned out the design I decided.

Large eski, or fibreglassed box, with a side that was minimum 50x70cm.   (This will allow 2x 12" and 2x large waveguides)

Battery / Solar

3.5mm input, bluetooth input

USB output (for charging devices)

Interesting.

Yeh I've been thinking about solar as well for MKII

What are you thinking along the lines of when it comes to battery?

The deep cell one here is good but a bit awkward.

Any advice on something a bit smaller would be appreciated.

Will yours have a car stereo?

I've been looking at those little marine radios, small enough to fit in a standard instrument gauge hole and still 4x50W.

Jensen I think they are.

And weather/beer proof of course.

:)

I'll probably still go with formply, but a bit thinner than what I used here.

Make it roughly the same size, but more speaker chamber and less wasted space.

And where would I find the build threads?

In the DIY Audio Projects section?

No drinks near the stereo, please ;)

I wouldn't have put the pictures online until the patent is sorted!

Feel free to copy.

And if you make any money from it, just drop me a sixpack every couple of weeks.

Nowhere.   I haven't started, only dreamed.   I think I'm going to need to build a couple in the next few ones.   One huge one (for the ski club) and one moderate sized one (for me).

I'm still entertaining the idea of modifying a large eski....  something durable but not too heavy.

I don't know.   Perhaps.     I was originally looking at classD amplifier boards, and a bluetooth->3.5mm audio adaptor.    Then I wanted a 3.5mm in, or an iPod dock in......  but you can get all this in a car stereo.   If it worked out for power requirements it would be a good option.

Na I know that, but you said "There's a few build threads around on these things."

Were you referring to this forum or just in general? :)

I have been fiddling with some of the low cost TPA3116 based Class D amplifier boards, and although not as good sound quality wise as some of my other amps, they could be great for this kind of project, acceptable sound quality and a lot of efficiency from a small, cool running amp board.

I had great results driving one from a 12V battery with a 12V to 20V DC-DC converter to power some Pioneer 6x9 car speakers. They also run OK straight from 12VDC but the DC-DC converter gives that extra bit of kick....

Ive made a couple of these types of things in the past, there is a good source of info here- http://forum.speakerplans.com/12v-powered-systems_forum5.html?SID=8249227za7f9cd25cd2bb184b6aeb2200231481 my latest is a small boombox with 2x 4" jaycar response car speakers the silicon chip 2x20w 12v amp and a 7.2ah gell cell, I just  use my phone for a signal source. I did use bassbox to design the cabinet, the sound is very very good! and run time at average levels is about 12hrs, it will easily out gun the Makita work radio. cheers Greg

Hey Greg feel free to post some pics of your builds here, I'd be keen to see them :)

As can anyone else who's built something mobile.
