So let me get this straight, we are now paying companies money to develop projects that they then sell, in my opinion if the company doesn't want to pay for research and development then be F#ck%d if i am, this world is getting crazier and crazier. Next thing you know after you purchase something you will then have to pay a weekly hire fee, its madness i tell you!

Totally Agree--the things seemingly don't sell too well as they stand--

And Adobe now charge a Monthly hire fee

Seed funding / venture capital is hardly a new concept...     Sure if the venture is 'not good', then you should avoid it.

Except you're not investing in anything; you have no shares, ownership or other equity in the business. You're only ponying up some cash to pre-order a product that may or may not make it to market.

Or to receive regular emails about the product being developed. I thought that to be supremely good value for money.

Sure, you don't own shares  (unless that what they happen to be selling on kickstarter I guess) .....   otherwise, depends on how you look at it.    The product I "purchased" through kickstarter:

  • Would not have been made otherwise
  • Was sold to me at 1/3 the future retail .... and 1/20th the price to do it myself
  • Has given a leg up to a great bunch of guys/company, and spawned a good community around the platform

So, for me, it was a sound "investment"    I "made a lot of money" on this one.

What'd you get Dave?

Anyone been reading Stephen Mejias in Stereophile on this kickstarter and the like?

Seems like a marketing strategy to me.

Put your money up and you might get something..............or not.

It is in fact a purchase of goods transaction with a threshold of Pre-sales to make the project viable. They do not describe it as an investment because there are very strict laws about those. Quite clever actually although its been done many times before to finance materials purchases and iron out bugs ( but without the touchy-feely hupla).

I believe that on kick starter you have to have a working prototype. The funds collected are used for tooling up and production and it is understood that there are no guarantees that you will receive the goods. Just because aussies are risk adverse doesn't mean that everyone else is. Try getting venture capital in Australia and then you'll see what I mean. It's almost non-existant ! It's little wonder why Australia doesn't have the equivalent of Apple or Google. Aussies would prefer to invest in jbhifi or dominoes pizza :(

cheers

I think it's a bit cheeky when companies that already make hi-end products go out for crowdfunding (eg Light Harmonics and their Geek Pulse DAC)

Very cool!
