jeremym12 Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Hi all! Does anyone have good recommendations for vintage or new amp to power Beovox M70s? 70(100) watts continuous power at 4ohm. Thanks! I know everyone has different opinions on amps and it's up to personal preference.
jeremym12 Posted April 11 Author Posted April 11 $1500AUD but a bit more if it's the right one. Jazz, old country, Samba, African and island music, modern alt country/rock..but if everything but nothing too heavy and listening at fairly low volumes
jeremym12 Posted April 12 Author Posted April 12 I currently have a Rotel RA-611 in great condition. Will post on classifieds. I will be selling/trading for something with more output watts and different soundstage. Thanks! Jeremy

Your RA-611 is pretty low powered - as I see from here: Your Beovox M70s, otoh, sound like they could do with an amp which can deliver a lot more current - ie. an amp which is happy driving 4 ohm spkrs: I presume you are looking at an integrated amp (preamp and power amp combined)? If so, I would suggest the following: Musical Fidelity M5SI Pass Labs Int-60 (or better ... Int-250) the Gryphon Diablo 120 in the SNA Classifieds: the Leema Acoustics Tucana ii in the SNA Classifieds: the Gryphon Audio Diablo 300 in the SNA Classifieds: the Pathos Classic One Mk3 Integrated Amplifier in the SNA Classifieds: the Anthem STR Integrated Amplifier in the SNA Classifieds: the Gryphon Audio Diablo 250 Integrated Amplifier in the SNA Classifieds: the Bladelius ASK Integrated Amplifier (Solid State) in the SNA Classifieds: Good luck! One of the above amps plus your BeoVox M70s should sound pretty nice. 1

BRS Posted April 12 Posted April 12 I'm not a vynyl guy so can't really recommend much. Hopefully some of the other members can chime in. Purely from an amp perspective. I always go for more grunt. By that I mean, watts double as ohms half. 100w at 8ohms and 200w at 4ohm. Its fine to have an amp that produces more watts than speaker manufacturers recommend just don't turn up the volume too much.
jeremym12 Posted April 12 Author Posted April 12 (edited) Would a Marantz 1122DC or Sansui AU-7900 do the job? Anyone know of a Sansui integrated amp for sale? I have a local lead on a Marantz 1122-DC all original. Edited April 12 by jeremym12

I have a local lead on a Marantz 1122-DC all original. The User Manual for the Marantz 1122DC says "61w into 8 ohms and 77w into 4 ohms ". That shows it has a pretty weak power supply - hence can't supply double the amount of watts (ie. a much higher current) into 4 ohm spkrs. So ... I'm sure it will sound better than your present RA-611 - but it won't bring out the best in the BeoVox M70s. The User Manual for the Sansui AU-7900 says this: Which is a bit confusing - so I would have to say: the Marantz would probably sound better but would not compare to any of the amps I listed in my previous post.
wen Posted April 12 Posted April 12 @jeremym12 have just posted a Creek Destiny for sale 100wpc, in your price range, well reviewed.
andyr Posted April 12 Posted April 12 @jeremym12 Specs for the 'Destiny' say max current is 25w - so, yes, that should drive your M-70s very well. 2

It does look perfect power wise..I've heard that they do high and lows very well but the mids get a bit lost with the Destiny..any other experiences or ideas for warm, balanced high powered amps vintage or modern? The ones you posted above in the thread are mostly out of my price range. Thanks! Jeremy

Hard to understand how an amp's frequ response would have a severe dip in the mids? Maybe that reviewer's spkrs had a weak mid-range. 28 minutes ago, jeremym12 said: any other experiences or ideas for warm, balanced high powered amps vintage or modern? No, sorry - not within what seems to be your price range, anyway. 28 minutes ago, jeremym12 said: The ones you posted above in the thread are mostly out of my price range. Aah, OK. 7 minutes ago, jeremym12 said: Anyone have much experience with the Marantz PM-80? Specs are: The fact that they quote the max output into 4 ohms as only 45% more than the output into 8 ohms ... suggests it doesn't have a good enough PS to be able to drive 4 ohm spkrs well. And your BeoVox M-70s state 4 ohms as their minimum impedance.
jeremym12 Posted April 13 Author Posted April 13 What does PS mean? It seems like that's heaps of power but maybe I'm not understanding a key factor! Also I think it was just the fact that the highs and lows are so great that the mids don't shine Thanks 43 minutes ago, andyr said: Hard to understand how an amp's frequ response would have a severe dip in the mids? One of the things an amp needs, to be able to drive low impedance spkrs, well ... is a power supply which is able to deliver the extra current which a low impedance load, requires. It's not just a matter of how much power the amp has. Edited Tuesday at 12:18 AM by andyr
