RCAguy Posted April 8 Posted April 8 When the High-Fidelity hobby began in the 1950s, it was just evolving from mono to stereo. Customers at my store were sticker-shocked that their allotment for speakers was now upwards of 1/3 of the total. After all, speakers were the weakest link in the audio chain, from mic to ears, based on frequency response, but especially on distortion, which was seldom revealed by manufacturers. Today, anomalies in audio electronics are vanishing. But even with great strides, speakers still have the most difficult job of following the audio signal. Yet many still balk at their cost, even greater with 5.1\7.1. No more true than with subwoofer(s), whose harmonic, intermodulation sums, and multi-tone distortion (MTD) are mechanical at frequencies above the bass-management crossover, thus are not filtered by it. These artifacts are at high enough frequencies to be directional, tear the soundstage from the mains, and without which cause mains' higher low bass and full-spectrum MTD.

After the room, the speakers have the greatest impact to the "in room" sound, and people should focus their available funds on the best speakers/subs they can afford.
