For any Barco Bragi Owners - Barco quietly updated the firmware last month to now include Dynablack! DynaBlack was previously only available on the much more expensive 3 chip projectors so this is a huge firmware update for Barco owners. DynaBlack

What does it do?

Dynamic Contrast can also be called Contrast Enhancement and in many scenarios by applying dynamic contrast you crush blacks and whites, reducing detail within the scene. Barco’s method is much smarter, breaking everything down to a frame by frame level and we only enhance the blacks and white in that unique frame, never crushing the details. We call this DynaBlack

To enable DynaBlack the function "calibrate linearization" must be turned on. It is only visible when you access the Bragi with the Pulse software via log-in over IP. If you look for this on the projector menu with the remote control (as I was doing initially) it is not visible and you will get frustrated not understanding why DynaBlack isn't working . Dont forget to log in also as a power user.

Anyway, I have spent the last few hours testing DynaBlack, and I can't find the right superlative to describe how phenomenal this upgrade is. In my system I found a setting of 'medium' to be optimal. There is zero colour shift that I can detect with either my eye or my Xrite tools. There is also no black crush. The blacks just get visibly deeper like a gray haze has been lifted. Its one of those improvements that you wonder how you ever lived without. Its quite obvious when shifting on/off and when moving through the different levels.

One other thing to bear in mind: For other Bragi users: You must have a V2 Bragi with this number: R96009691. If you have a V1 then DynakBlack is sadly not an option for you.

The Bragi CS already had the most natural, highest resolving, smoothest and best-looking image I have ever seen from a projector at this price point (note we are in the realm of high end here as the Bragi CS is circa $60,000 AUD+ depending on lens choice ) . Now, with DynaBlack, it's even better with the inkiest blacks I have yet seen in front projection. This upgrade was totally worth the wait from Barco.
