Hilltop Hippy Posted February 10 Posted February 10 G'day gang, Does anyone know where to source decent quality, 240v, 10amp plugs from? something nicer than the standard $5 jobby from Bunnings?
andyr Posted February 10 Posted February 10 I use these: Or, for thicker mains cable ... the 'heavy duty' version. 1
aussievintage Posted February 10 Posted February 10 Bunnings have similar in black white or gray btw. is it still illegal to fit these yourself - most info I am finding says so. Also 1
pete_mac Posted February 10 Posted February 10 I have used the Clipsal 1439SHD in the past (it appears that Deta have very nearly copied them). About $1 2 each. 1439SHD Quick Connect Plug Straight 3 Pin 10A 250V Transparent 3

Also avoid going for the bottom $5.80. The housing is too bulky, if you need to plug to a GPO that’s up high the weight of the cable is enough to wiggle it out. Because it’s a huge housing it’s easy to knock out physically and literally rips the those fixing screws out and damages the housing rendering it unsafe to use. Get plugs that are transparent so you can see the wiring and compact so the weight of the wire doesn’t make it fall out 2

Tom Burke Posted April 13 Posted April 13 There are plenty to choose from on eBay, so you will have trouble picking one. Gold? Copper? Silver? Rhodium plated silver?

I very much doubt the pins are made of solid gold or silver. Copper, maybe - but more probably brass ... then gold plated / silver plated / rhodium plated.
ray4410 Posted April 13 Posted April 13 also most aust plugs on ebay and amazon do not have the aust standard insulation on the live and neutral blade's . 3

I'm sure you're aware, but these are just your standard Chinese-spec plugs (which don't quite fit snugly in Australian sockets in some instances) in fancy shells, and they also lack the insulation on the active and neutral pins. Most certainly not standards-compliant. EDIT: Ray beat me to it!! Edited April 13 by pete_mac 2
audiofeline Posted April 17 Posted April 17 Yes, I saw that Krell logo and thought they wouldn't be making Aust plugs. Maybe for the US market due to the size (pre-tarifs), but not for Aust because of the small market. But I doubt if Krell would be making plugs anyway. The Chinese will put a high-end logo on almost any budget-quality item!
Grimmie Posted April 20 Posted April 20 _ And again, they are not legal (Australian Standard) due to lack of insulated pins. It is legal for non-licensed people to fit them, as long as they are capable. (There's a word to 'spark' debate.)
audiofeline Posted April 20 Posted April 20 (edited) Two previous discussions that overlap on this topic, with some good responses. One comment is that the Bunnings Deta plugs (a copy of the Clipsal) are not well-regarded. I concluded that there isn't an "audiophile" plug available in Australia that meets Australian Electrical standards. I've used the Clipsal pictured above - it looks better than the cheap plugs, Clipsal is a reliable brand, and it's also available in a variant for thick cable entry. _________ _________ _________ Edited April 20 by audiofeline
