I am hoping someone can help me with this.

I recently bought a Technics SL-M1 TT with the S-shaped tone arm.

Effective arm length 230mm with a mass of 12 grams

Headshell weight 12 grams (Audio Technica LS-12)

Cartridge/stylus weight 5 grams (Ortofon OM20)

My question is that I have a Ortofon LH-9000 headshell that weighs 16.8 grams. I was thinking of using this headshell as an upgrade but it’s a lot heavier than the LS-12. Can I still use this even though is heavier? And is it an upgrade? There is not much info about the LS-12 that I can find.

Thanks

First thing to do is put it on the arm, and add 5 grams (to simulate the cartridge) and make sure the counterweight on the arm can still balance it, and set the tracking force where you want it.

Then go to vinyl engine and check the resonance of that combination of effective weight and cartridge compliance.

I think both headshells are good quality, above the entry-level.

The different materials will influence the characteristics of the audio.

The Audio-Technica LS-12 is aluminium (the 12 in the model number indicates 12g).

The Ortofon LH-9000 is a carbon fiber headshell https://ortofon.com/products/lh-9000

Thanks guys, I do appreciate your responses.

I went into vinyl engine and found out I need some more technical info on my setup.

I will get this info and input the figures in.

This is a steep learning curve for me, just trying to understand the definitions of the many terms used is a tad overwhelming but I have to start somewhere.

Fun times ahead.
