Since my company vehicle was broken into,  I’m now super paranoid and cautious.  Just put a dash cam in the bosses car and I’m going to do the same with the company vehicle.
With keyless entry,  it comes with flaws that criminals have worked out how to access the security via the headlamp after disabling the horn, then scan for the FOB code and the vehicle is gone in less than 60Sec.   With the way things are in Victoria,  kids young as 13 break into houses looking for car keys. There was  Merc that traveled around 900km around Victoria before it was apprehended and stopped  Unfortunately kids this age get a slap on the wrist and let off on bail,  some have up to 70 charges and counting!   I’m thinking of putting a GPS tracker in the vehicle so it can be located and found and the police are able to stop the vehicle so no one else gets hurt.  Wondering what people here use in case you find yourself in this unfortunate situation

Look into a Ghost immobiliser and also a key box to put your keys in at home. Stops the key signal being increased from outside your home

I found an ankle one out front of my house, so I handed it in, I'm sure he would have been glad to have it back.

Was the ankle still in it?

I’ve been using an app called AirGuard.

It detects tracking devices following you. Had a friend find one on her car and been using it ever since.
Worth a look if you have a car in Melbourne and want to know if it’s being tracked by a device

Yeah, that's ok for Bluetooth tracking tag devices. But what about those super spy tracking devices they use in the movies that stick under your car? You won't find them unless you look under your car at night and see the dirty big, flashing red LED... 🤣

I've also been considering getting a GSP tracker for my vehicle, has anyone had (or heard of any) experience with this tracker? Seems to be a simple enough system and all Aussie made/supported.

@Addicted to music which unit did you end up going with?

Cheers,

I heard a tech guy advise to put your keys in a faraday cage receptacle. Even a microwave oven is said to do the job to stop the key signal sniffers detecting the keys.

Simple to just program a new key via the OBD now.

Yeah, that’s true but for

the times when your friendly local car thief doesn’t have all the kit with him.

from vicpol,

https://www.police.vic.gov.au/preventing-motor-vehicle-theft

"Specific car makes and models targeted

Thieves target specific car makes that are easy to access electronically. These models often use electronic push start technology and don't need ignition key to start.

We recommend using an OBD port lock for cars with electronic push start technology, such as:

Holden Commodore (2013 - 2017)

Toyota

Hilux (2016 - 2023)

Landcruiser (2008 - 2021)

Camry Prado (2012 - 2022)

Rav4 (2019 - 2024)

86 (2012 - 2017) and

C-HR (2017 - 2020)

Subaru

Impreza/WRX (2015 - 2018)

Outback (2015 - 2018)

XV/Crosstrek (2014 - 2022)

Levorg (2016 - 2017)."

if you have push button start car as they say .. get an obd lock...

both our cars already have apps to track... my previous bmw you could shut it down remotely ... not sure can do that with our newer cars .. will check..

I haven’t yet, but thinking of getting something like this.   Avoid the Bluetooth especially the AirPod as the the Samsung tag/tile is better.   Definitely go for a OBE lock as I’m going to get one shortly.    1/3 of vehicles stolen are push buttons starts/keyless entries, and it doesn’t matter which brand of vehicle it’s all the same using the same technology.  Thieves accessing the headlamp wiring to tap into the multiplex bus to bypassed the security are organised with intelligence, they also scan for the wireless key code that the fob emits and then access the vehicle via the OBE port.  2/3 of thefts are 11-25 yr olds that break into the house to access the vehicle fobs,  hence the reason I have security cameras that have flood light activation, it’s smash and grab mentality.

Anyone reading this post please go to the link and signed the partition for bail reforms,  we can’t let kids doing adult crime multiple times and some pushing in access of 200 crimes and constantly get let out doing the same stuff the very day they are let out:

My car is a '95 Patrol with normal (old school) key entry and start.

It's funny but the older it gets the more concerned I am about it getting stolen, not from a value perspective but from the fact that I've had it for 24 years, looked after it and have it nicely set up for touring. I really don't want some shmuck stealing it and trashing it.

I think I'll invest in one of those trackers, every bit helps.

And yes that petition is good, there needs to be stiffer punishment especially for repeat offenders. They know exactly what they're doing.

Cheers,

Russ
