Dustin Posted January 19 Posted January 19 (edited) Gentlemen, I have a Dual CS 601 which I purchased back in the early 70's when I was young but less windswept & interesting. It has sat in its original carton for ten years since moving house. I want to get it back on the road. The TT is currently extricated from the 'plinth' and on my bench. I recall one of the controls was a bit dicky, but don't recall which one - I used it anyway at the time. Underneath, there's surprising gobs of what must be original grease and it's mostly congealed, hard or sticky. I'm gathering together the supposedly recommended lubricants since the originals are long superseded. Also need to get some 500K silicone oil for the tonearm damper. It's running the original Shure V-15 Type 3 from the period with not that many hours on it. I'm wondering if the cartridge might need a new stylus - does the suspension suffer with age? The original phono cables have some pretty severe corrosion on the RCA's so they will need replacing. These are the fairly common, crimp connected thinner cables, not the double shielded (?) thicker ones commonly seen as interconnects. I've wondered if installing a RCA terminal block is a good idea or not because it would inevitably involve an additional set of contacts in the path. The belt seems to be OK but the 'stupidpimple' has departed the scene of the crime entirely - ha. I have some of those coming for the experiment. Am I on the right track? What else should I worry about? Thanks in advance for any input. Cheers Edited January 20 by Dustin Pic added.
wartman Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Replace any capacitor you find. Check, possibly replace bias belt. Thakker keep them in stock. The cables on these are fine, just replace the RCA plugs.
wartman Posted January 20 Posted January 20 I've sent a few V15 MK3 cartridges to be rebuilt by @cafe latte, no problem with the suspension yet.
Dustin Posted January 20 Author Posted January 20 Thanks, Wartman, I've added a pic. Can't see any capacitors on board but that's better idea re just just changing the RCAs. "bias belt" - is that the little toothed belt for adjusting the speed? It seems a bit loose but appears to work OK. One of the strange push-on connector posts in the AC inlet has come adrift from the base, so I'll have to figure that out.
wartman Posted January 20 Posted January 20 If you need spare parts, try Dualfred in Germany, or @Direction here in Australia.
wartman Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Yes, the bias belt is the little toothed one. As long as it's not jumping teeth when you are turning the bias (pitch) knob, it should be fine. I think there is a capacitor underneath the other plastic cover near the motor. 1
Dustin Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 Thanks Wartman, Found this one under the brown cover. Any comment on its appearance? I've Googled how to test it with a multimeter but don't know if that's sufficient. I'm not an electronics guy but can use a soldering iron and happily remove and replace it if that's what is needed.
wartman Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I usually change them because of their age, but I am a bit OCD about these things. When these fail, the motor will continue turning when the tonearm is in its off position. 1
