Hi all,

I have a Sony ubp-x700 and it has 2 hdmi outputs.  HDMI 1 is marked as audio/video output and hdmi 2 is labelled as audio output only.  The manual implies that the output for audio on hdmi 2 is “better”. I don’t know how they define that.

i use this player for playing 4K and bluray disks - and also for playing SACDs.

my series of questions are - is it possible that I can have 2 separate cables used for both outputs, and the video output (HDMI 1) is connected to the av input on my pioneer receiver and the audio (hdmi 2) output is connected to a separate audio source on my av receiver?

My preference is to have the audio from sacd going directly into the amp without any pass-through via the eARC port on the tv - and have the av content from dvds/blurays pass through the av receiver and back into pioneer via the eARC.   But I just can’t get it to work that way.  Either I have no sound in the dvds - and I don’t know if this is related,  I don’t seem to get any audio when I am using a net video streaming service being streamed via the tv.  Should I be using a separate audio out on the tele back onto the av receiver to hear content sourced from the tv - or does that audio go into the av receiver via the eARC port?

back to my primary question - can the 2 hdmi outputs from the Sony be defined separately like that - that is hdmi 1 for audio and video from dvds/blurays, and hdmi 2 for SACDs?

if not, will I get any loss if I pass through the SACD audio through the tv?

this is my first foray into av receivers, multi channels  and also eARC.  Much more complicated compared to a 2 channel system.  😞

I think the way Sony want you to use those HDMI ports is to connect HDMI1 directly to the tv and HDMI2 to your AVR. I have mine set up like this. You have to mess around with the HDMI settings on the BDP to get it to work the way you want.

The purpose of 2 HDMI ports is to allow an older AVR without an up to date 4K video pass through to work. Feed audio to AVR and video to 4K to TV

The theory is that video can affect the audio signal and separating the audio signal can improve its quality.  In practice, it is difficult to tell the difference. And then, may have the problem of synching the audio and video signals.

What makes a difference for SQ is the quality of the HDMI implementation and my Panasonic UB2000 has much better SQ than the  Sony (had model before X700).

It is not possible for an AVR to take separate video and audio HDMI signals from the same BD player.

You could feed video to TV directly and use eARC to feed audio to the AVR for Blu-ray.  For SACD, you can then change the setup and use 2nd HDMI to feed DSD audio to AVR.  Cannot pass DSD audio via TV.  Not sure whether it is worth the effort though???

For purists, it is mandatory to pass DSD audio to the AVR.  For me, Dirac Room Correction and better HDMI implementation have a much larger influence on SQ and I have always converted DSD to PCM.

@captain starlight

I have a Panasonic UB9000  and have the video and audio hdmi output connected to my Denon AV Amp for surround sound and video pass through on the hdmi earc connection to the 4K TV, that way you get surround audio back from the TV earc output for Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.

From the UB9000 I connect the audio hdmi output to my Lumin P1 Streamer/DAC for Hi-Res Stereo sound from DVD and Bluray music discs and can also play 5.1 music from the same discs via the AV Amp, so the audio is output on both hdmi outputs at the same time on the UB9000.

The UB9000 does not play SACDs, however with your Sony you could connect your hdmi outputs similar to my set up, noting that what you have connected to the hdmi audio output must be able to process DSD for your SACDs unless you convert the output from your Sony to PCM when playing SACDs.

Let us know how you get on with it.
