powerav Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I felt an absolute must to start this thread. Don’t matter what format just as long as in multichannel. I have a playlist on Roon in multichannel music and when I put it on it’s just game over in terms of absolute audio heavenly bliss. Why doesn’t every single music/audio lover have multichannel music set up I have no idea. I’ll start with Toy Matinee “The Ballad of Jenny Ledge” This is what you get when a major music label “Warner” give some super talented studio musicians an open check book to make what ever music they want.
Satanica Posted January 20 Posted January 20 I've got a 4 channel setup with 3 subwoofers. Interestingly, the new Opeth album below does not have any content in the LFE channel of the 7.1 mix. Quite often a surround digital mix/master can also offer less dynamic compression compared to the stereo mix/master and it seems to be the case here.

Yeah unfortunately this is an issue that plagues a lot of modern releases, when I play my multichannel playlist on Roon in general the older sacd, dvd audio, DTS cds and quads that were made 20 years ago sound so much better. An example Deep Purple machine head quad version has so much more oomph and channel separation than the new Atmos version.

In the case of the new Opeth album, the surround mix/master is more dynamic than the stereo mix/master and I've found this to mostly be the case with modern releases. I think the surround mixes/masters being typically more dynamic, is more of a reason I gravitate to them rather than the surround sound aspect. And any surround track can be down-mixed well to just stereo if one chooses.
Snoopy8 Posted January 30 Posted January 30 (edited) Just been listening to DSOTM Quad version from Immersion Box set (2013), and still prefer that to the Atmos version (50th anniversary, 2023). While the Atmos version is excellent, the Quad version makes more distinct use of each channel. However, not all media players can play 4.0 but fortunately the Pana UB9000 does a superb job ** on BD disc. Edited January 30 by Snoopy8 Added **
