I have this mate who is very clever at repairing and servicing VCRs . So I thought I'd give one a try and record " War if the World's " from LP to a brand new Maxel ultra VHS tape.

The recording was from Luxman PD-290 with Supex 100mkiii cart through a Ear 384 clone modified with Vishay caps , Luxman A901-C Control battery powered preamp .

The sound was just brilliant I wholeheartedly recommend you give a try . Almost indistinguishable from the LP being played directly.  The cost $70 for the player a 4 hour tape $10.00 if you're into experimenting like me very worthwhile.  The recording was done on a Philips VCR .

In the past, '80s and '90s, I used to tape  the songs from lps and cds, and the hifi vhs sounded as good as the original sources. Another pros of vhs is that you can tape the songs for hours for a long playback.

The VCR provides the benefit of tape surface usage and playback at a high rate of speed.

The only drawback is the audio circuit and level controls which is why OP has used a HI FI  VCR seeking the superior output and audio level control in recording.

Great very cost effective underrated alternative to compact cassette and RTR.

Ahh, sweet memories.

I had a bit of fun with that back in the day.

I found my Hifi Stereo VCR was a great way of making up compilations for background music and parties, etc.

You could have 4 hours of music while sacrificing very little in the way of audio quality if you used the better tapes like your Maxell.  Mine would have been TDK E-HG or similar.

Have fun, but it's not something I will revisit.  There are just too many better and more convenient options now.

I do still have a fully functional Panasonic Hifi VCR in the man cave, but in the last 10 years it's only been used to digitize the home movies and some stuff like concerts, and special episodes of Sounds Unlimited and Rage, etc. that we recorded over the years.  Done some for friends and family members more recently.

Sorry, not entirely true, Granddaughter & I watched the HR Pufnstuf tape last year 😆
