betty boop Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 (edited) 3rd for me in the Alfred Hitchcock iconic movie collection... in Vertigo ! another of my all time favourite hitchcock movies. this one from 1954 ! so we are talking a movie from 70 years ago ! I find even that thought hard to fathom as so amazing it’s on 4k uhd blu-ray and so remarkable is the restoration done....grain is part of the picture ..but not overly so...there is also a bit of artistic touch to a few parts of the movie...eg some scenes are done with a glow or halo... for significance .. similar when in the woods which is a bit over rich in colour... this movie just has an amazing feel to it. Set in another time. And with a calmness that has you as an onlooker just left with intrigue and questions ! For lovers of great movies this is indeed an Icon amongst them ! by the way the audio is DTS-X ! but yes obviously limited by audio mix of the era. This will always remain one of my top much loved movies... if have visited San Francisco will see there are so many land marks in this movie. some screen shots below so can see how well it comes up on the big screen, here portrayed by our jvc 4k projector Edited December 30, 2024 by betty boop 4 2
Ian McP Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Hitchcock films are timeless classics! I assume you have Rear Window as well. Have you delved into the magical world of Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger? This documentary is an excellent starting point. Saw it at MIFF (Melbourne film fest) this year. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/feb/21/made-in-england-the-films-of-powell-and-pressburger-review-martin-scorsese < The work of film-makers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger is discussed with passion and authority by Martin Scorsese in this richly enjoyable documentary, for which he presents his thoughts and recollections directly to camera. When the British establishment shamed itself by turning its back on these homegrown masters, it took this Italian American film-maker to rediscover them in the 1970s – and now the Powell/Pressburger films almost cannot be seen except through the medium of Scorsese’s glorious evangelism; their movies and his have virtually become intertextual events. As he takes us through the great Powell/Pressburger films such as The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, I Know Where I’m Going!, Black Narcissus, Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann, Scorsese also plays clips of his own films, including Raging Bull and The Age of Innocence, showing how he had been influenced by these predecessors. How remarkable that a movie director who came of age in the era of gritty violent realism – precisely that movement which supplanted the romantic idealism of Powell and Pressburger – was to give them a second lease of life. > a couple of my faves, watch these and you'll want to see more!
