Briz Vegas Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Dear audiophiles what drink coffee. I got tired of elaborate expensive coffee machines failing and bought myself an Alessi Pulcina 3 cup moka pot in the Italian tradition. The brand of pot isn’t that significant, I just wanted something that looked a bit fancy. I read that pot coffee strength is somewhere between a proper machine and a filter coffee. The challenge is the milk I put in my coffee, which the machines do well. I don’t like microwaved milk and making it on the stove when for one seems a faff. I now make the coffee with filtered water, pour into my mug, put the pot straight back on the still warm but off hotplate and fill the top with milk. Over a couple of minutes the milk warms sufficiently and the coffee rests ( I have no idea if that is a thing) so when I pour the milk into the mug it’s pretty much the perfect temperature for drinking. I then add water to the pot top straight away rather than waiting till I wash up the empty mug. It just seems to be the perfect way to use the waste heat in the pot. I think it works as well as any other heating method and makes it hard to overheat the milk. Volumes are perfect for a mug so no measuring required. I did a quick google and it seems other people aren’t as lazy as me. Am I a total philistine, assuming cafe latte hasn’t achieved that already? Does anyone else do this?

We use the microwave, which work perfectly as long as you take the time to set it up right. We don't have enough milk for a latte and the final result is quite a dark brew. Our Moka is a 6-cup standard octagon shape and the walls wouldn't be thick enough to retain heat to warm up the milk. Our current warming regime is full (1100w) for 44 seconds for two cups (about 1.5cm in hers and 2cm in mine). The result shows a little steam rising from both mugs. We also have one of those Breville milk frothers, which is OK for froth, but it only warms the milk to 70 degrees and Mrs CE prefers 85. But it does make a great hot chocolate!!!
